Heavy duty 3/4 ton vs 1 ton

Just bought a new 07 Ram 5.9l HD 2500 4x4, dealer told me that that the only difference between a HD 3/4 ton and a 1 ton was one more leaf spring, I have some friends that tell me that the 1 ton has some trans upgrades and other stuff but could not tell me what. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so what are the differences?

I think the only difference is the overload springs.

The rating sticker in the driver's door jamb is somewhat different as well.

When I was shopping it was only a 1k difference for the 1 ton SRW, not sure on the DRW, but I couldn't locate a SRW so I bought the 2500.

i guest if you dont need a dually you would be better off getting a 2500 and adding springs air bags or timbrens.at lease you get more on resale or trade for a 3500.

3500's have stiffer front springs (available on the 2500 with the plow package) , and bigger rear brake pads.....along with the rear overloads already mentioned.

I got mine only b/c of the color........after we already had a deal worked up on a 2500 they didnt have the color I wanted so after about 45 mins of going back and forth he gave me the 3500 srw for the same price.

not so sure the front springs are different i use trimbren suspension aids on my 3500 front an rear. the ones for the front are the same for both trucks the front touch the axle .that would mean the distance from mounting point to mounting point would be the same.both with a 5.9, the difference must be in the spring rate but you would think that a stiffer spring would make the truck sit higher they might be variable rate springs that would explain them being the same height

A stiffer spring would only make the truck sit higher if the had the same # of turns and were the same height. I have owned 2 2500's and now a 3500, and I am sure that the front springs are different. My 2500 megacab would bottom out up front going over any speed bump at almost any speed. My 3500 has yet to touch the bumpstops.

Although I don't own either, I looked very thoroughly at both 2500's and 3500's and found them to be identical, save for the overload springs in the rear. Front springs even had same part # on them when comparing the 2 side by side. Ride the same too.
The actual difference in price if you got 2 100% identically equipped trucks is about $400 adder for the 3500.
