Best way to wire Truck for a 7 pin Trailer plug

My 04 didn't come with the trailer package but it does have the Blue plug under the dash but no Blue wire coming out of it. Any way I need to wire my truck for the real trailer plug ( I think it is 7 pin ) with a break controller. I read that the controller plug is supposed to be wired up to a plug behind the driver side front wheel, but again these two plugs do not have the normal lite blue wire nor do they have any extra wires from one side of the plug to the other 8 wires in and 8 out.

Also I have read that we really dont want to use the trucks wiring for the trailer anyway, so what have all of you come up with to do this correctly and not Burn up these poooorly wired trucks

Thanks in advance

Joe

Most people that don't want to use the trucks wiring for the lights use a Modulite. It hooks into the light wiring for sensing but powers the trailer lights directly from the battery.

Your truck has the brake provision (blue plug) under the dash. The brake power wire is Dark Green not Blue. You should have 4 wires for the electric brake provision, DG = Brake power, Black = Ground, Tn/Rd = power from fuse 1 (30A) & Wt/Tn = brake light sense. There's also wiring for the brake/turn lights, tail lights, aux power & Backup Lamp. There is a 10 way connector at the rear end usually over the differential.

Thank you for the info, I will check into the 10 pin plug near the rear dif, I assume that the brake controller wire will be the Green wire in that plug.

The Modulite sounds like what I am looking for, I looked at a hoppy but it was only a 4 pin

Where did your Mopar kit plug in at. Does it have a separate power source or is it just the harness to run from the under truck plug to the 7 pin at the bumper, I was looking at a Mopar harness on a web site last night about $70.00 it was the Factory harness and the plug for the bumper.

I was thinking about the Modulite and wondering why the Brake controller didn't run through it, then I thought you need the Controller signal to come direct from the Brake Controller otherwise the brakes wouldn't be adjustable.

What size wire does The dodge truck have for the Brake Controller.

Preferably 10 gauge wires for main power and to the trailer. Can probably get away with 12 gauge though.

Yes, it'll be green in the 10-way connector. It's on pin 7.

The Modulite will only be 4 wire. It only feeds the lights. The brake, charge, aux & ground go straight to the 7-way from the truck wiring. You just bypass the truck trailer tow lighting circuits by using the Modulite.

the kit plugs into the flat 4 connector behind the rear bumper, and also runs 2 wires up front, one for a constant 12v source off the battery and one to the brake controller.

This, plus you have to wire in the brake blue wire under the dash. I took mine up to a mechanic that specializes in these trucks and he used another truck with the factory set up for reference and charged me like $75 to hook that up and the transmission temp gauge. It was more than just hooking up the blue wire, I also hooked up the quick disconnect end and popped it into the factory location, connector was $30 from the dealer... That way I can swap out controlers or take it out of the truck.

The dealer had a heck of of a time finding the quick disconnect connector, they gave me one with all green wires but it worked.

Good info thank you, I will be using the modulite Hd and wire everything else from scratch. I couldn't find any plug in near the rear dif just the one behind the front tire and then the tail lights.

You should have a 4 way attached to the drop hitch cross tube with a plastic snap thing. Might have to look for it.

All you really need to run up front is the hot 12V and brake wire.
