Aftermarket Sony stereo barely receives local stations?

Last week we picked up our 2003 Ram 2500 Quad cab SLT 4wd. We are getting ready for a road trip and the wife wanted the option of the MP3 player for the long expanses where there are no stations. The factory radio/CD player worked well (Non-Infinity) when I pulled it out. I added a Sony with MP3 /i-Pod capability, but when I tried to set my local pre-sets, I could not receive any stations. At first I thought it was a defective unit or a defective antenna adapter, but after switching both, one at a time, there is no improvement. The antenna is the factory unit. Where do I need to look for the break? The stereo is connected through the factory harness via an adapter.

Last week I put a new Kenwood radio in my truck. It's a really cool unit that includes HD radio, Pandoria, Hands free Phone, etc. I couldn't get any radio stations after the install. I pulled the center portion of the dash and looked the wiring over really good. My problem turned out to be a wrong antena adapter. It fit like it was the correct adapter, but when I pulled it appart I saw where the adapter co-ax that plugged into the factory antena connection was bent and didn't fit - it was too large. I purchased from Crutchfield and they are sending me the correct adapter, but of course I couldn't wait for it to get here so I went to Best Buy and picked the correct on up for $20. Problems solved and loving the new tunes!

Thanks! I will take a look at it again. Right now I have an aftermarket antenna hooked up via the old style antenna cable, mounted to the windshield. It works better than what I had, but not better than stock, so I am still looking.
