Aftermarket rim backspacing

I'm in need of new tires. The Nitto Terra Grapplers are shot at 19,xxx miles.

They're a 285/70/17. IMO the 285s are a nice blend of looks/function. They don't look like the go-kart tires that came stock, but aren't so big they kill mileage or cause issues with my fifth wheel.

The problem I'm having is the crappy selection of "E" rated 285s. I'm aware of "D" rated 285s having the same weight rating as the stock tires. I've tried "D" rated tires on my last 2500HD and they didn't handle anything like the same sized "E" rated tires did,I'm NOT putting lesser rated tires back on my truck. If your suggestion is to run "D" rated 285s,don't even waste your time posting.

Now about the aftermarket rims. If I were to go with some 18" rims, there are a few more choices in tires. I could go with a 275/70/18 which I think I'd actually prefer. The 275s are almost exactly the same height, but are a bit narrower.

I absolutely hate tires/wheels that stick way out past the wheel wells. I want the tire combo to be tucked under the wheel well like the factory ones are.

What offset and backspacing do I need to be assured the wheels will be tucked under like I like them?

Thanks

The stock 17x8 wheels are abound 6.15 inch backspace and +42mm offset. These are close from what I remember, dont have the exact specs handy.

I have yet to find many aftermarket wheels that come close to that, at least not ones I like or could afford.

i think an 8.5"-9" wide wheel with 5.5"+ BS should be good for keeping the tires tucked in.

Check out Centerline's selections, they have a variety of styles available in a 17x8.5 with 6" of backspacing.
