advice on purchase 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT 4x4
Hi all,
I am new to this forum and am looking for some good advice/comments on buying a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT 4x4. This is the first time that I will be owning a diesel pickup. Basically, I would like to know if there are particular issues to be concerned about with this model. The truck has 99,000 miles with only one owner. It was sold to the dealership as a trade in. Concerns at that mileage would be the following
Ball Joints Steering links (tie rods) Shocks AC - my compressor went out at 108K Check the brakes and when was the last time all the fuilds were changed. At 100K I changed every fluid in the truck. Thanks, Jay |
Find out what warranty work was performed on this vehicle, other than that if all listed by Jay checks out, go for it.

The common rail 5.9's, (03 - 07), are known to possibly develop injector problems, particularly leaking injectors, if you don't install adequate fuel filtration on the truck. They come from the factory with 10 micron fuel filters and that ratings is far from correct for a common rail injecton system. A 5 micron absolute filter is the best you can get for the stock filter cannister, but a stand alone 2 micron filter would be the best thing to have. Take GM for example, they know this, they use about a 2 micron filter on the Duramax's around that year, and they have pretty similar injection systems.
Running an additive is another important thing since ULSD has practically no lubricity what so ever. Check the truck on a cold start to make sure it doesn't idle real rough while puffing out blue or white smoke. Have the dealership run an injector pressure test or something similar to see how they are all working. Don't let this issue turn you away from the truck. They're very reliable workhorses that just need to be taken care of properly. |
I currently have an 06 with absolutely zero engine issues at 112,000, so I can say they are good trucks. The only thing that bothers me a little is the truck being at a ford dealership. I know that maybe he might have traded to like a ford suv or something but if it were me I would trade and get another dodge unless the one I had was very problematic then you might see me trading at a ford dealership. hope you understood my point. jmo

I have an 06 with 85k on it now. Never been to the dealership except for a reflash not long after I got it.

My tin foil hat might be tight but why did the previous owner trade it in after 99k of the 100k mile engine warranty??

Make sure the trailer light plugs work, the 06 is prone to TIPM failure..

The truck looks great but I too am wondering why it was traded at that mileage. Some people are strange and trade in vehicles at 100k no matter what. I like the fact that it has stock wheels and sized tires, much less wear and tear on the drive line.

I have a 2006 and it has been problem free. It was to the dealer for recalls and the HVAC repair-which is a typical problem that usually happens in early mileage. You can get the Dodge maint & repair info from a Dodge dealer for a few bucks, I would press the Ford dealer into getting it, they can get it for free. I know several people who trade in/sell right at 100K, that may or may not be anything more or less than a usual practice for the 1st owner. If the dealer really wants to sell this truck to you, they will be workable on giving you THEIR warranty for a given timeframe, I would seek at least a 6K warranty out of them if I was paying their asking price, otherwise, look into buying an aftermarket warranty and pressing for a price reduction at least equal to the cost of that warranty.

See if you can contact the previous owner and ask him some questions. I beleive the have to release that info. I have an 06 for 5 months and no problems. just get your fuel at a truck stop or some other place that moves fuel fast
