AC compressor acting weird

When I first start the truck my ac compressor cycles on and off about 5 or 6 times real quick. At the same time it is doing the air coming out of the vents are hot then cold then hot etc. until the compressor stays on for good then everything is okey. Any ideas? Possibly low on freon?
BTW it only did this every so often, now since it has got up to 116 here it has done for 3 day's in a row.

Yep, freon level is the first thing I would check.

Hey, it it were 116 degrees here, I don't think I would want to stay on either. LOL

High temps can cause an AC to act strange when it first kicks in trying to get pressures adjusted. It can do it when the vehicle has been sitting long enough for everything to raise to those high temps including the interior.

Temps that high in your area it is very possible it was kicking out due to High side pressure getting to high hence the off. Next time check to see if the fan is engaged when this happens. When it stops acting stupid is probably when the ECM finally cuts on the power to the electric fan clutch. You will hear a slight roar at idle when the fan cuts on. Very audible. Hope this helps.

My AC has been acting a bit off as well; i too live in the phoenix area w/the god awful heat. Mine runs OK but it cycles louder at times like it is on recirc, and the right side vents blow warm air. I am not sure if i should take it in to have it checked or if this is normal.

I kinda figured it might be trying to level the pressure of with it being this hot.
But I'm still going to check how much freon is in it.

My AC has been acting up lately too. When you first start the truck and turn on the AC the compressor comes on like a freight train and makes a very loud clunk. Not sure what thats all about? Not trying to steal your thread just wondering if yours or anyone elses is doing this weird start up?

This is normal for the first crank of the day. Make sure you are turning off the A/C prior to shutting down the truck. Sometimes this will cause your problem.

Ya thats what I do is shut everything down prior to shutting the truck off. Its when I start the truck and turn on the AC that I hear that awful clunk when the compressor kicks on.

Mine has done the same thing. I took it in once to the dealer, and they checked things out and said all was ok. I still think there is something wrong, Just have not had the time to take it back.

The clunk is normal for the compressor to do when engaging A/c for the first time. The load roar that you hear sound to me like the fan clutch. That is if You hear it outside the truck too with the doors closed. Otherwise, you may have your A/c switch on recirculation and you are hearing the blend doors hit each other.

According to my owners manual to start the A/c system you should place the selector *** on fresh outside air (Third position from bottom left on third *** - Non-dual climate controls) and crack a window. Allow the system to exspell the warm air in the cab through the cracked window. Once you feel a noticeable change in temperature then turn *** to recirculate (Bottom two settings - Non-dual climate controls). Wait a minute and then close the window. Believe me, you will want to wait a minute, it seems my truck has a cab pressure when doing this without waiting a minute.

My AC is also doing the clunk after I start the truck up. It does it even though the AC is off. After I turn the AC on it makes the same clunk again. I have had my wife start the truck while I watch the compressor and it engages for about 3/4 to 1 full rotation just after the truck is started??? Dont have any clue why it is doing this. Still haven't figured out my other problem yet.

When i turn on the AC after starting the truck with it off , the AC compressor makes kind of a woosh sound like freon excaping. other than that it works fine so i don't touch it. Dealer wouldn't find anything anyway. Wierd.

Mine clunks real loud too, but only once...doesn't seem to matter if it was off or on when truck was shut off...been wondering about this too, got 13.5k on the truck and has done it since the day I bought it, but can't replicate it, so haven't even bothered to take it to dealer yet. I don't see how it can be normal tho...never heard another vehicle do that ever...
