4X4 dually box clearance for 5th wheel
Well I have just about decided to buy a new 08 dually 4X4 but the major issue delaying my decision is the box rail height. It measures about 59.5 inches which probably makes it the highest box in the land and reduces my fifth wheel clearance to about 3 inches. I want 5 inches for safety. Has anyone had any issues with clearance between the box and the trailer or will the truck sag a little bit with 2200 lbs. in it. Has anyone moved the spring spacers to the top of the spring pack or have any other solutions.
thanks a lot

I have a 3000# pin weight and my 07 dually 4x4 doesn't sag enough to level my 5th wheel. It is at least 2" high in the nose. I am thinking of removing the lift blocks at the springs.
I don't want to have a warranty issue or develop a bottom out problem.
I would like to hear from anyone who has tried this solution.

On the SRW I used to have, 2000 pin weight or so would only set the truck down a couple inches.
I relocated the axles from above to below the spring pack, which gave me plenty of clearance with the trailer riding level. It handles fine, and since I left the stock spring seats on, it can easily be reversed.

Since I have 35" tires I had to do a little more to get my 5th wheel to have ample clearance. I installed a 6" tall x3" wide piece of steel channel on the 5th wheel frame, then I set the springs on the top side of the axle. Plenty of room now plus the 5th wheel now has more ground clearance.

Just curious,I looked at my 08 and seems to me if I remove blocks my springs will come very close to the rear calipers and will completely block access to mounting bolts. Am I missing something ?

Maybe your '08 is taller than my '04.5; I'm not sure of the specs. We pull a 34' Carriage Cameo with a pin weight (loaded) of over 2200#. It levels out the truck nicely, but leaves about 1 to 1.5 inches away from hitting the overloads. I've got a good 6-8 inches of clearance between the bed rails and the 5er overhang.

I have a 07.5 4X4 DRW and have about 6&1/2" of clearance with my 5er Sportman Sportster TH this is with the pin being about 10&1/4" below the underside of trailer (this will very with differance 5er's as the 5er I had before this one had a good 8") and hitch head around 3+" below the side rails of truck.
I also feel like rvman that taking the spacer blocks out will make it all but imposible to service rear brakes as the spring will block the top bolt from coming all the way out.

I "removed" the spacers from the truck on both my 04.5 & 07.5. This gave me an extra 1.5 inches and eliminated any rail height issues for me plus I have the air bags for leveling the truck while loaded. I'm always towing different trailers so I had to come up with an across the board type solution. No problems or bottoming out with the spacers removed. Also adjusted the headlamps too.

What you obviously don't understand is that most of us need the versitility of a pickup box when not towing. Your SOLUTION is somewhat short sighted.

no i have thought about that but a bed side can be made out wood if you really need bed sides. I'm not being short sighted just trying to find the down falls of a flat bed are really hard to me. Yeah the wood sides are not as clean looking but they would work just the same if needed. I guess its just my $0.02 thats all
