OK, so I'm a little odd... what can I say?
davelinde, Why not take a friend next time you play on the ice and ask them to watch the tires to see if they're locking up (skidding to a stop) or if ABS is cycling the lockups. Have him watch both sides so he gets a good look at each wheel. I'm curious if the fronts cycle (lockup) at a different rate, (more often, less often, longer etc) than the rears. Try it in 4x4 low and 4x4 high and report back.
Just as you've already noticed as you turn on dry pavement, while in 4x4 low, the inside tire on the front axle spins against the pavement scrubbing tread off your tire. Wouldn't the ABS sensor at each wheel report hub velocities different on the front axle? and does our trucks ABS send more braking to the entire axle or just to the faster turning hubs?
