3/4 ton truck?
 

1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, 1 ton ?? what does this all mean? If I have a 3/4 ton truck, what does the "3/4 ton" means? Thanks.

I think at one time it use to be payload capacity. But I could be completely wrong.

Correct, once upon a time.

Doesn't really mean much anymore, payload wise, just that the 3500 (1-ton) can carry/tow more than the 2500 (3/4 ton) which can tow/carry more than the 1500 (1/2 ton).

True. Years ago (and I mean decades) it was payload capacity. Starting with the very early pickups at the beginning of the 20th century.

1/2 tonners literally had a payload of 1000 lbs (0.5 tons)
3/4 tonnners 1500 lbs, etc. I have read some books on early pickups - it's amazing that something with an engine that produced <100 hp, and < 200 lb-ft could move loads that big.

Now, lets see, my "1 ton" rated F350 has a GVW of 9900 lbs. It weighs somewhere around 7300 lbs or so, with me in it, so I have a payload of about 2600 lbs, or 1 1/4 tons for my "1 ton pickup".

Here's something else to ponder -

My 3500 supposedly has a payload of around 2700lbs.

When I looked thru the package of paperwork that came with it, I found one sheet printed in red that indicated slide-in camper capacity & location.

According to this sheet, my Heavy-Duty, High-Output diesel torque monster can only carry a 1400lb slide-in!?? ???

Where do they GET this stuff from??

File this one under 'capacity of the funny hitch receiver', class 3 AND 4 in one, depending on whether or not you have weight-carrying or weight-distributing.
