2nd Gen Vs. 3rd Gen noise at highway speed
2nd Gen Vs. 3rd Gen noise at highway speed
I know the noise at idle is a lot less noisy in the 3rd Gen. but what about on the highway? I heard they didn't put as much insulation in the new trucks. I drove the PSD 6.0 today and it was about the same at Idle but seemed either more quiet or smoother or both at highway speeds.

I liked the power band in the CTD much better.

How does the 2nd Gen compare to 3rd Gen and highway speeds.

RLS

I too was wondering the same thing. When I spool mine up to 2,000 and cruise, it seems quite noisy compared to when I am at Micky D's ordering a burger.

Is it just me, or does the noise increase that much with the RPM's?

This is my first Dodge diesel, had a Ferd, and it seemed to quiet at the upper end.

Hunter

The 03's noise will increase at highway speeds, however it will still be magnitudes quieter than an 02 or older. Tire noise of the 03 seems to be louder than engine noise. ;D
The noise of the Common Rail does increase with higher RPMs or under accleration, as the pilot injection events are closer to the primary injection event, negating their effect somewhat.

Yeah, like most things, it's all relative, eh? ;D
I was driving 'round the other night and noticed tire hum coming in the cabin. Also, the gear I always stash behind the seats was clinking and vibrating. I thought, "Geez, these trucks were supposed to be quiet!" Then, I realized I was hearing sounds I have not heard with my previous Dodge Cummins.
I was never able to hear the tire hum before (even with some gnarly mudders) and I also never had heard all the little vibrations in the cab. Now, all these sounds stand out for me.
You boys watch - there's gonna be a whole heap of people complaining about creaks and rattles from parts on these new trucks. They never would have heard most of those noises before.
Best to y'all

I have driven an 03 3500 SRW and it was much quieter at any speed than my 98.5. On the road it was about the same as a gas engine.

I really liked it.

Dan

I drove my dad's 01 last night, (had to pick it up from the dealer for him) and I had forgotten just how loud it is. My 03 is much quieter whether at idle or on the highway.
