2006 dodge diesel TACH 30 minute fix with a phillips and a star bit
2006 dodge diesel TACH 30 minute fix with a phillips and a star bit
FIX YOUR TACH IN 30 MINUTES WITH A STAR-BIT AND A PHILLIPS SCREW DRIVER and buy me a beer sometime after for telling you how and not giving your money to the ******* or these so called electronic gooroos that want 200.00 to fix yours andwait for the shipping.
COMMON SYMPTOMS ARE NO TACH, PEGGED NEEDLE ON BACK SIDE OF STOP PIN, REAL HIGH RPMS AND TACH JUMPING ALL AROUND THE PLACE.
1ST take off bottom of dash above feet, next take off stereo bezel area, next take off bezel around the cluster...THERE ARE YOU_TUBE VIDEOS showing how to remove those parts if you have not done it before on the 3rd gen trucks. NOTE you do not have to remove the cup holder to get the radio bezel out.
Now take 4 screws out of gauge cluster and pull it out far enough to unplug the 3 wire plugs in the back.
Now take cluster to work bench and place on a towel and remove the 18 star bit screws on the back. Then remove the circuit board and gauges from the clear bezel...””DO NOT PULL ANY NEEDLES OFF THE GUAGES””
take the circuit board by itself back to the truck and CAREFULLY plug it back in and start the truck and you will 99% have a working tach.
Now listen carefully!! take the cluster and replace the back cover but only put the most outer screws in all the way around . Then put the screws in over the speedo, oil, temp gauges.
You should have 7 or 9 screws left over....DO NOT put them back in!! the entire area around the TACH side should have no screws replaced except on the very outside edge.
YOU”RE finished go put cluster in truck and plug 3 wire plugs back in the back and start the truck. You should have a working tach and you can shake it around and hit it and the tach will stay working. I have fixed 3 2006 dodge dieselslike this and I know my 2 are still working after 25 and 38k miles and I drive on 4 miles of dirt roads everyday and the clusters have had no further issues....the 3rd tach was a friends from work and he moved out of state but he has never told me it has quit working so i'm sure it works still.

I'll be trying this next week!!
Mine works fine some days and drops to about 200 at idle on other days. very erratic. I know it had something to do with the flexing but didn't want to screw it up with soldering things. Looks like I will try this instead
I'll send you a beer card (gift card) when complete

I've had the same problem for years. Tach works most of the time, but quits when it wants to. No rhyme or reason behind it's wanting to work or not. You guys trying this fix, please post up your results. I may have to try this on a long weekend/holiday, in case I accidentally strand myself doing this fix!

Did it this morning and only put a few miles on so far but it looks to be fixed!!
Mine took 2 hours but I also did come cleaning while it was all apart. I also had to pull the cluster twice. After replacing it the 1st time I did a second "Check" and the tach dropped again.
I ended up with ONLY the outer screws back in and now it seems fine

It's the click and ship stuff... just swing by and grab a few flat rate boxes...
I mean, I've never seen it done, I read it on the discovery channel or something...
I have been looking at my non functioning Tach for the last 5 years. Local Dodge dealer wanted way too much money to replace the cluster.
It took me 40 minutes to perform this in my driveway yesterday. Works as advertised
Thanks Toomanytrucks
