110 Volt Cab Heater Mounting and Selection
110 Volt Cab Heater Mounting and Selection , yeah that's what it says............I know you think I've lost my mind again. But I'm tired of freezing to death before the dang heat builds up enough to open the thermostat on the Cummins.
I have decided to go to Tractor Supply or Walmart or somewhere and buy a da^^m heater to warm up the big quad cab before I get in it in on these cold mornings. I walk by the Ram and get into the Cherokee 'cause it gets a lot warmer, a lot faster than the RAM.
I'm gonna mount it and put a cord that runs from the front bumper, where the block heater is, into the cab and put a receptacle in so I can plug up the heater in the winter months. I know how to wire it, any suggestions on what to get and where to mount it? I see these little room heaters at Wally World and I can't think of a better place to use one than my cold azz ram.
I have to confess that I was busy this year and put off buying a seat heater from Geno's. I will have one next year I promise you! But until I get one, I think one of these little 1500 or 2500 watt heaters ain't a bad idea! lol Jim

I think that is a pretty good idea. You could tap into the block heater cord and plug it in all at once. The thermostat on the inside heater will keep it from over heating. Just make sure nothing flamable is covering the heater and your insurance is paid up!
Don't get the cheapest heater! Buy a quality ceramic one with a thermostat.

If you don't get many back seat passengers, maybe you could put the heater in the back. I would put the heater in some sort of metal cage to keep things from getting draped over it. Tip-over switches might be standard equipment these days but be sure and get a heater that turns itself off if it tips over.

Yes, I know that it needs a tip over switch and a secure mount will double the safeness of that. The only problem I see is that something could be placed over the heater if it is mounted in such a way as to facilitate that happening. I think a mount could be properly placed to avoid that issue.
I am considering a drop in pedestal Mount in front of the rear cup holder that will elevate it above the rear seat and be centrally located to dispense heat.
The electrical connection will not be hooked in top the block heater because I may want to leave the block hooked up all night. The Cab Heater would be on a timer to come on about 30 minutes before I leave for work. It should be nice and toasty in there by then. Maybe before the heat bleeds off the Cummins thermostat will open!
Two more considerations; An invertor to plug it into for even further length of use and the other is a 12 volt heater called Back Seat Heat that I saw a few years ago. It may still be on the market and could be fed with 12 volts to use,

Jim, I don't know, man...
.....but this has "Disaster" all over it. I can see you walking out in the morning and finding the cab in flames. Have you looked into an Espar heater? These little heaters burn diesel fuel to warm the block and the cab. You can also rig it up to turn on the defroster too. Plus you can run it anywhere; parking lots, work, etc. Granted, it's a "little"more than one of those ceramic heaters.

It's 20 degrees now and will be single digit by morning. I'm COLDDDD!
I know it sounds crazy, but the Espar sounds more dangerous to me than the little ceramic heater. It is already burning! and I don't think I can afford one either. I will secure the little ceramic heater to a mount so it can not fall over.
If I didn't have the Jeep, I would consider trading for a Gas burner if I had to shiver every day of winter with no heat. I'm cold I tell you!
Why does the Cummins not get warm as quick as a gas engine? jim

OMG ! I'm a whiner, I'm so sorry guys, here I am in lovely Tennessee within 20 miles of Jack Daniels Distillery and 10 miles of George Dickle and I'm whining like a little school girl that I'm cold. You guys probably had to walk to school in -23 degree weather or ride the dog sled and here I am complaining about being in Tennessee, I'm so ashamed.....................
Oh well, I think I will have another good drink of Dickle White label and get all warm and feeling good inside sittin' here by the fire, Heck no wonder I go out with no coat on and get cold. Oh yeah we keep most of the Dickle here in Tennessee for us to drink and send that other stuff out for the rest of the world to ooh and ahh over.
You know ole Uncle Lem Motlow died from all of that money he made sending that BlackJack Whiskey up north. He couldn't get his safe open to count it and he kicked the door, broke his big toe. It set up gang green, he died a week later........true story. lol
You guys have a good Christmas and remember the reason for the season. Take time for your family and to stop and look at what all we have to be thankful for. Merry Christmas guys, jim

Heated Vest?
Yes, a heated vest, close to 100% efficient I bet.
You know, the kind motorcyclists use? That is what I would suggest.
You can get an adapter that plugs into your cigaret lighter. A little switch in your lap will be handy
as you won't have to keep unplugging the cig lighter plug every 2 min which is about how long
it takes to get you to being almost too warm. I think mine pulls about 44 watts and will be the
most efficient heat you could come up with.
Costs more but you can get a jacket style that heats the arms and neck also. All this can be
provided to you by your friendly motorcycle dealer as long as you bring your wallet.

j/k have a great Christmas, too.Greg
Many of us UP HERE use interior car warmers. Its a common product and has all the safety features as well as timers to come on 3, 6, or 9 hours after plugging in. Around $50.00 for a good one.
I walked to school uphill both ways 11 miles in snow as high as the telephone wires in minus 40 temps.
The minus 40 is no lie. The rest of the trip to and from school was 8 blocks but sometimes felt like 11 miles in deep snow.

If this is what you really wanna do, Stop by wally mart or something an pick up one of those lil car heaters for auto uses. bought one for mother for xmas last year. We didnt wire hers to run all night, Just when she turned the key on. but i was instant hot air for her. I felt kinda bad for ther the other night Shes like it didnt get above 40F in that darn truck on the way home ( bout 40 minute drive) Im like bully crap. So we get done with dinner im sitting in the parking lot in -3 f Doing a breif check of her cooling systems and what not. Had good fluids couldnt find a shut off valve to keep the Heating radiator in the cab from getting coolant so im like tell ya what Merry xmas drive my truck home and ill take your. (2000 and 04) She was happy but im like if i smell one hint of cigerrette smoke your done ( Biggest pet peve)
The whole trip home i bet that thing didnt get above 110-120 too cold at the time to worry about it But got me a good xmas gift idea! ( cold weather front Finally found a black one, She has a black sport)
Moral of the story> I dunno im just a rambling But shes cold the whole ride I feel so bad.
Other than the cold front anyone have any ideas on the warm up?

Go to DC and get the Cold Weather Front for about $100. It fits under the hood and can't be taken by your jealous neighbor. It wil help heat it up real quick and don't be supprised if you hear the fan kick in alot to get good air flow even though it's 40 or less.
Mine warms up in about 10 mins. in 20 degree temps with the block heater plugged in overnight.
How about putting a good ol' fashion pot belly stove in there! That would keep ya'll warm!
And if you have stacks in the bed then you could hook 'em to the stove! Coal and Diesel Power!
In all seriousness the heater in the cab makes me nervious. The 110 volt wiring also makes me nervious. Of course I might me a little paranoid!
But if it were me (its cold here too) I would stick with my long johns and down jacket. A hat helps too...
