04 keys switching to 06 style

I called the sstealership parts guy and asked if i can buy the new key and remote combo for my '04 that has a seperate key/ remote. he said no, of course he said no...anyone have any experience with this? I also need a second set of keys. Sstealership wants $14.00 for a KEY! just a plain key that looks factory, $40 for my style of remote and $55 to program it for my truck? HUH?:o ***? any help is appreciated!
thx
Mike

Consider that a deal. The all-in-one fob keys are around $140 and up before programming. Sorry, you can't upgrade yours to it. The module systems are completely different. One wire Bus (PCI) versus a two wire Bus (CAN). The good news is that if you already have one functioning remote, you can just buy the remote and program it yourself. That's in your owner's manual near the front 20 pages or so.

Another option is to check ebay.
I've seen new keys and new/used remotes for sale. If you go that route the sellers usually provide you with the programming process for your vehicle. I think as long as you have one remote that's programmed you should be able to program another one without going to the dealership.

Good luck

EBay can be a good idea. I bought three new keys for less than $20 and my dealer (now closed due to the bankruptcy reorg mess) cut them for me for free. One caveat though though is that you will need good two keys to program the new ones your self. If you only have one a dealer will have to program the first additional key for you. Same for the unlock remotes need two to do it yourself. The keys I bought on EBay worked fine after I programmed them and I have used them as my primary keys ever since with the originals put safely away.

I apologize, I misspoke you need two keys to program any additional keys maximum of six keys in total (page 13 of my owners manual)

but only one key fob to program additional fobs maximum of four fobs in total (page 26 of my owners manual)

Again I apologize for the confusion, been a few years since I did mine.
