03-04 2wd 6 speed, what's your real world MPG?

I was looking at a pretty nice 3500 ST 2wd DRW regular cab. It's a 2004 6 speed.

A supervisor at my company says he is getting over 20mpg, his overhead said 23 mpg today. He has an 03 2500 2wd auto with 200K miles on it. It's bone stock.

Is this realistic, he is doing mixed driving as well. What are you guys getting? Thinking about trading my honda off if the mpg is that good and getting a early 3rd gen 2wd reg cab dually for work so I don't put wear on my current truck working. Plus it's nice not having to trade off vehicles (I try to drive the honda to save gas and miles on my truck and it's a nice car to zip around in). I get about 28 mixed in my honda accord and about 15mpg in my truck.

I get over 20 empty most of the time. Mine's a 4x4 w/4.10's too. I have stock wheels/tires and no power adders anymore. Ask if you can borrow it for a few hundred miles and check the fuel MPG to make sure.

18.3 is the worst empty - summer AC never turned off. !9.8 regularly in the winter. 13 towing. Craig

Wow, are yall hand calculating this? This is a big decision, I really want to do it.

I want to keep my current truck in good shape because knowing me it will hit 100-120K miles and I'll end up buying a $50K truck. I'd like to keep it for 5 more years, it's my "nice" vehicle.

16-17mpg for around town, 20+mpg highway. My last tank with mixed driving was 20.4mpg.

Right now I'm about at 19.5mpg, this is mostly highway but I do pull a light 12' trailer alot hauling my equipment around. The last time I got a full tank without pulling a trailer I averaged 20.8. Overhead tells me 22.6-23.0 constantly.

HOBrian 10-07-2010 10:13 AM

Im at 19.8 back and forth to work 60% city and 40% highway. If I go straight highway I can see 23-24 going 65. I have seen 25 That was the best ever! ( I also was trying to get the best mileage out of the truck, so this was really a one time deal)

19.5 with edge on level 3 but mine is srw

garbri 10-07-2010 03:57 PM

Even though mine's a HO 2004.5, I still pull in 23+ on a regular basis. Sometimes the overhead reads as high as 25MPG, but 23 and change has been my norm for a while now.

In signature.

First gear start, always. Shift at 1800 from second onwards.

1700-1900 rpm for all miles

33 in a 40? Check.

58 on Interstate? Check.

(City traffic is 15 mph average. A 300-mile trip at 60 is 25" longer than at 70 . . which I'll make up by trip planning and discipline, not to mention relaxation and better safety).

100k on tires

100k on brakes

170k with one repair (u-joints).

No squeaks or rattles? Check

No undue wear and tear? Check.

Etcetera. It's all to the good.

The triple nickle is the one to have.

I carry a pocket calc. and figure every tank. My empty miles is always mixed but a little more than half of my road time is city. I lived outside of town and run my errands in town once a week.

sweetwaterguy 10-08-2010 07:46 PM

I drive an 04.5 short bed 4 wheel drive. I can consistently get 20 and change if I keep my speed under 68. From 72 up, you can watch the guage go down. It is a little lower with winter fuel.
Also, I hand calculate. My overhead, which used to be fairly accurate, is reading 2 or more miles higher than actual mileage.

Empty just over 20, Pulling a 28ft fifthwheel, 15.

Rednecktastic 10-09-2010 10:44 PM

Well looks like you guys in the 04.5 600's are getting about the same. Which is the same engine I have, guess it's my heavy foot that's killing me.

Still might go look at that dually but might hold off unless I can get a great deal on it. Regardless I will need a good pulling 2wd DRW truck soon though if we buy out a certain business we are looking at....

Decisions, Decisions..... [laugh]

Load Hauler 04 10-10-2010 07:46 AM
