$100 fuel filter change ??
OK
So I've got my truck in for lots of little things including an alarm system that goes off all the time and eventually I had to pull the fuse. As were going through all the little things the tech tells me that he thinks I should change the fuel filter as well. He tells me it's $100 or so. I come home and search around and filters are $20 or less. So I call back and a different tech whos taken over responsibility for my truck says "they're difficult to change cause they're in the tank, and the part is $56 do you really want to get under there and do it yourself?
So I was curious, is there a fuel filter in the tank?
I haven't changed one on this truck or even looked for it yet, but on my marine diesels fuel filters take about 5 minutes if you're slow !!!
I think I've just been had......
Quick response appreciated.

Go to a Cummins dealer, buy a $15 dollar filter and take 5 minutes and do it yourself. Another Dealer scam. The same filter at dodge costs $70 (Canadian). All you need is a 1 1/8th" socket to get the top of the canister off. Its plastic, so be careful.

Thanks Guys !!!
I appreciate the input. It was one of those deals where you think they're full of it, but you haven't actually taken the time to check it out yourself so ya have to fold the hand knowing you're probably getting the snip
Bought a set of filters from Genos..... NO MORE of this snip stuff
It's a shame they have to scam such an easily seen task.

This is a very good reason to do your own PM's, plus when you learn how to do the PM's, it will be done better than most shops are willing to do.

Sounds to me like this dealership's techs don't work on many diesels. The third gen trucks have the easiest filter change I've done. The only one easier to access (that I've seen) is on the 6.0 PS.

The 6.0PS is a pain also. It has two filters.
One on top of the engine, and one along the frame rail, side mounted, so when you open it up, it all over you and the frame and the ground.

The earlier PSD's only had one filter and it sat on top of the engine under a fancy cover that had a hatch in it. Take that cover off and it sits right out there in the open. In fact the design of the filter and housing on my old '97 psd looks almost identical to the filter and housing on my 04.5.
