No need to really bother with the muffler or intake. Just going with the Programmer and deleting the EGR and DPF system will net you the MPG and other benefits you're looking for.

I didn't do an intake. The stock one flows pretty good. I'm running H&S and the best I have gotten is 20.12mpg on the highway. 17-18 stop and go driving. I noticed a pretty good increase when I switched to Amsoil also. You'll notice your EGT's will be cooler with a 5" TBE but only a little. If you're just wanting mileage, you'd be okay with just a DPF delete. If you want it to be a little louder, do the down pipe delete as well.

DPF delete, EGR/Cooler delete, Smarty JR67ME set on SW #2 if you don't tow heavy and don't pound on your truck too hard. No need to do the intake unless you just want to spend the $$. Depending on your driving style, you should see 2 to 4 mpg increase.

At todays diesel prices, that will pay for itself pretty quick. Your truck will love you for keeping all that soot out of it!

I've got a Smarty ME and the delete pipe. I also plugged off my egr. The stock airbox is good, but if you want to mess with it, do the home made psm style mod. read here http://www.psmdiesel.com/air_07.5.php
I got the individual parts from summit racing for around 35 bucks. I also added an AFE ProGaurd 7 drop in filter, but the stock filter is good. These parts should be here monday.
I run my Smarty on SW#1 and average 17 to 18 with mixed state road and local driving, and have seen as high as 22 on the interstate driving between 62 and 65. keep in mind I don't hammer on my truck.
Good luck which ever way you decide to go.

My experience has been similar to Tommies - running the same basic set up- did delete down pipe also. Been flirting with 22 mpg on highway, hopefully summer blend will help. Also not running over 69 mph helps. Slower is better but just can't do it.

For you fellows (and gals) that have done the deletes, have your mileage and power increases been significantly more using the summer blend fuels? I have about 17K left on my factory warranty and have been following the deletes on this forum. I live in a climate that requires a winter fuel blend about 1/3 of the year. Bone stock I get 18-20mpg non-towing highway in summer, but in the winter the mileage falls on its face and I'm lucky to get 14mpg. Are the gains from the deletes as noticable with the winter fuel blend?

If you are getting an honest 18 to 20 mpg in stock condition, you should be very happy. Especially if you are not having any emissions related failures. I don't have to worry much about winter fuel here in Texas, so I can't comment on that. But......I think I would leave well enough alone if your truck is running good with no CEL problems related to the DPF or EGR.

Maybe you got one of the rare trucks that likes having soot pumped down it's throat!

So, either i read this post wrong or I'm completely clueless...

I'm willing to bet it is the latter of the two...

Is there a cheap way to get better mileage...

I am very leary of doing the deletes, so would it do any good if i go with just a programmer????

I tow on a regular basis, so i know i cant get too crazy with a programmer.

which would be best without doing the deletes???

Blackmax? MiniMax? XRT Pro?

Smarty Jr?

Any others that I haven't mentioned?

Like I said I want to gain mileage...I'm only getting between 12-13.5 whether I'm in the city or on the hiway.

Not apples to apples since my is a 2007 and 2wd, but after I did deletes I average about 21mpg and get as good as 24mpg if I baby it, and that is on the performance setting (level 3).

I'm using the stock air box with the K&N drop in filter.
