"US" Smarty with "ME" tune?
All,
I'm about to get the turbo cleaned/possibly replaced, then I'm going to delete. I have read a number of threads but I couldn't find the answer to this (I may have missed it).
Regarding the tunes for the ECM:
1. Is it possible to buy a US smarty, then put an ME tune on it to flash the ECM?
2. Has anyone used a J2534 device (e.g., Bosch, DrewTech, AutoEnginuity), downloaded the Smarty tune (the "ME" tune) to it, and then flashed the ECM?
--I called Smarty and asked if I could buy their tunes for another device, then they informed me the tunes are free... so I am guessing there would be no way to do #2.
Thanks in advance.

No on the US Smarty taking the tunes unless it was manufactured prior to March of last year. You have to be careful as there are people selling new ones, claiming they are old ones and you end up with a unit that will not accept the ME tunes.
As far as trying to use a Smarty tune in a different device than the Smarty..I would say be sure to have another ECM on hand to replace the one you screw up.

The simple answer is if the tuner has US in the serial number it cannot load a delete tune.
As far as how safe any secondary market is to purchase a used tuner...
Not very for any of them.
Best you can do is verify its delete capable (no US in the serial #), its not vin locked (Start up screen shows SMARTY if unlocked, *SMARTY* if vin locked) and you use a purchase method that can refund your money if you get shanked.

All,
So I ordered a Smarty J67 ME off of eBay. What I got was a RaceMe.
I hadn't done any research on RaceMe since I was planning on buying a Smarty J67. The RaceMe S/N is Rme 130001481 and there's another number on it that is Rme-07. Also, the instruction manual says "6.7L, 24 Valve, Cummins Diesel Engine".
Does anyone know if this will work the same as the smarty? I paid $900 for it, so I want to be sure before I open it up and can't return it.
Thanks.

"US" Smarty with "ME" tune?
I have been reading about the RaceMe. It appears to be identical to the pre-EPA Smarty's (i.e, the ones with no "US" in the serial number).
Post #2 above was directly about the Smarty, his point doesn't rule out the RaceMe being a viable option.
Do you know for a fact the RaceMe won't work?
While I am upset I didn't get what I ordered, if the RaceMe will work, I'll keep it.

Raceme is the offshore version of the Smarty tuner and is delete capable with the raceme tunes. Like you said, basically a pre-epa US smarty tuner that has its own, non smarty compatible firmware.
It will ONLY do deletes. It will not load street tunes. Where as the new Smartys will only load street tunes.
I agree you didn't get what you ordered but if you did you would have received an epa Smarty street tuner and would be returning it.
You can return it and buy a used SmartyJr for between $500-700 that will load street and delete tunes if you like. Or keep the Raceme. There's a pretty ood following on the 4th gen cummins forum.
You could also consider the Efi autocal 1 for around $750.
Anyway you go you'll have a delete capable tuner.

A street tune is an epa emissions compliant non-delete capable tune.
Pretty much the same tune as the delete tune, just without the delete capability.
A custom tune like efi is adjustable to your trucks particular mods and running condition.

xcc_rider,
I am being told by the guy that sold me the RaceMe on ebay that once a US (EPA compliant tune) is loaded on a pre-Ban smarty (to include the ME smarty's), that it locks the device - so that it can no longer accept the ME tunes in the future.
You said "You can ... buy a used SmartyJr for between $500-700 that will load street and delete tunes if you like."
Have you gone back and forth with your smarty like this?

I figure I'll try it out for the knowledge factor before I delete. If I like the results then I may postpone the deletes for a while...
I haven't heard of anyone on any of the forums having their pre ban Smarty locked by loading a street tune either. But I will call brian tomorrow and see what I can find out and post it here.
Here's a link to a used SmartyJr for $500: http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/07...rty-jr-me.html.
There's forum rules for accessing the sale forums so let me know if you can't see the ad and I'll post the info here for you.
