need advice on Smarty Jr setting when towing
I'm heading to the mountains with a 6k TT in about a week and need some clarification. Right now I have the Cali style deletes and Smarty JR, software V23 set on the fuel economy tune. Will this be safe for my motor? I've heard of timing adjustments, etc and I have not made any, just the fuel economy tune loaded from the tuner. I don't need to be first to the top, I just want reliability. Should I reprogram to stock settings for the mountain towing?
I'm probably over thinking this, but want to be sure so I can sleep at night. Friggin OCD.

Just got back from towing 11.5k fith wheel 1700 mi. through Black Hills of S.D. Had very long steep grades. Ran smarty on sw1 or fuel economy w/ tq & timing set on default. Highest egt was 1299. Locked out 6th gear and didn't lug motor. Truck has cali style deletes.

how about a setting at towing, and I believe timimg is at 2, I'll be pulling a 14000# 5th wheel, in some mountains. should I detune it down some, or maybe default the timing? Keep it in tow setting, no guages.

yes the smarty jr is the only programer that restores timing dynamically on the economy setting you gain 40 hp by this alone and lowers egt 250* . on tow it it lengthens duration and some other things to give 30 more hp and still be 250* below stock. people make to much out of timing and torque on the jr. for us that understand it we can vary them to fit our mods and driving style. for your truck the way it is set up you will gain a little by going to 4 timing. the torque setting is confusing it is actually backwards than most think tm stands for torque management and the higher the number the more the management therefore the less torque on the low end rpm the stock did this to keep carbon down on start untill the turbo spooled up the kids like tm1 to smoke every one out on takeoff just leave it on default i think it is 2 your 6.7 you will not see the smoke because of the smog junk. you need to do the egr delete and get a turbo back 5" exhaust you will not believe how big of an increase in mpg you will get

I have tried my JR on my 2010 truck at 1, 2, and 3. I am getting the bets mileage at 3, and it is called "Towing" setting. If it is not safe to tow in this setting why does Smarty call it that?

Set it for towing and forget about it. They do their homework at MADS and he doesn't develop this stuff to melt you down or cause engine damage. If you mess with the timing and torque adjustments then you may do damage, but the default settings in the programmer are safe.

I've done extensive reading about what is "safe". They say anything above 60 hp over stock is hard on the tranny (automatic or standard). I've loaded the towing tune and for me its too aggressive down low. Is it fun? You bet, but I worry about the transmission and only go 40 over and things have been great.

When towing heavy, I really do not punch it too hard, so hopefully I won't ter anything up. If I do, I will get a tranny built that will take it.
I wonder what kind of torque we are making at level 2? (420 hp) I would imagine it is over 800 lbs.

Agree on the power. Level 2 seems much more responsive than level 1. I tried mine back at 0 for a while and I just could not stand it.

eg. 60 hp increase, approx 120 ft-lbs increase.
