Compair 5.9 and 6.7

I am a old man and use my truck for everyday and pull a 5th wheel. At the present time, a 04 GMC 2500 does the job well. I will be buying a Dodge 3500 in the near future. I do not know whether to buy a 04 - 07 5.9 or a 07 - 09 6.7. What is the differences between the engines such as fuel mileage, breakdown's, or something that cost's big dollars to fix? Normally mileage for me is 15 to 20k a year. You guy's can make the choice for me. Thanks for your input as it is needed. I see an update is needed at the bottom of this thread.

The 5.9L Cummins in stock form will provide better fuel mileage then a 6.7L engine. The 6.7L was released to meet the emission rules set forth by the EPA for 2010. This engine uses additional fuel to burn off soot that has been trap by the DPF (diesel particulate filter) during the regeneration (regen) cycle which will lower fuel mileage. The earlier 6.7L engine 07.5 and 08 had the most emission related recall and warranty issues. The newer models 09 thru 2013 have been more reliable and have provided more improved mileage over the earlier engines of the 6.7L series.

The 2013 model year will have better fuel economy and have higher tow ratings over any other model of the RAM trucks, a course it is the newest.

I have provided two links for you to review that should help you when researching what model year to purchase. They are both from Turbo Diesel Registry .Com which I am a member also.

The first is a link on the 2013 trucks and what to expect the second one is called Turbo Diesel Buying guide which will explain the 6.7L emission system in greater detail.

Thanks Jim for your reply. You sent me the info that was needed. It was a lot of reading and it helped me with the answer. I will go with the 05-07 5.9 because of the emission regulation. If anyone is interested there is a excellent 09 in Alabama close Birmingham for 29K.
