Why dont our 3rd gen 24v sound like 2nd gen 24v? The sound of those trucks are incredible. Not just the exhaust note but the engine sound.

Its mainly b/c of different injection pumps, cp3 compare to a VE, P-Pump, Vp-44. If you want the same exhaust as those trucks put on a 2nd gen 24v manifold.

and they also added another event in the injection process....they did this to make it cleaner and to quiet it down

The audible difference is due to the injection event:

- P- and V-pumped injection event is all in one big squirt, so combustion is all in one big explosion, hence the big noise and rattle

- CP3 inj is timed in bursts to coincide with beginning, middle and end of combustion-event window - small squirt(s) at beginning of window allows flame to begin easily, softly - up to several larger squirts after flame has started creates max combustion and high heat needed for the power stroke - smaller squirts at the end of the event as the flame is cooler help to develop and maintain torque where the P and V pumps are falling off - thus, the unique CRD sound, augmented with the oem 4" exhaust system

The post-combustion squirt was added to keep EGT's up high enuff to cremate the soot'n'stuff in the exhaust gasses in order to meet current Diesel emissions requirements - also seems to reduce fuel mileage\economy

The third injection event also helps spool turbos faster and harder than the previous vp and P pump trucks. Allowing us to run bigger turbos easier.

The switch from the 3 gen manifold to a 24 valve manifold will also get rid of the raspy sound the 3 gens exhaust makes at WOT. And also is not as restricted as the 5th & 6th cylinder as they are on the 3 gen manifold.

SO, could one just order a aftermarket manifold for the 98-02 24v and have a different exhaust sound?? Or does it have to be a stock 24v manifold... I don't see how the manifold will change it, I always thought it was the way the fuel was injected that made the difference.

Yes, you can order any 24v manifold you like. The exhasut sound changes from the restriction from 5&6 and the 1-4 through the other side. The older 24v manifold is more balanced in flow. The #5 cylinder on the 3 gens is actually the hottest running cylinder because of the restriction in the exhaust manifold, you can check this with a temp gun on the manifold. #6 runs slightly cooler than #5.

To use a older manifold on a newer truck with a single turbo you will have to get a 2 gen turbo drain, down pipe, and make an intake to work with the turbo. There have been several people on the forums that have done the conversion just to change the exhaust note and it also makes the turbo more noticeable.

The way the fuel is injected does change the sound of the injection pulses that is why they don't have the loud rattle like the older trucks.
