How many are running without their mufflers, and what are your opinions?
Do you or do you not recommend?
Any gains in MPG, or performance?

I am tinking of keeping the kitty and going without the muff'

Any and all opinions welcome.

Best $65.00 I've spent on this truck yet. It doesn't seem any louder at all than my 05 did with the Aeroturbine 4040. I'm finally just over 20 mpg when I drive it right.

Muffler and cat are gone. Has a bit of drone under a load at around 50-60 mph. Pretty loud too. I ran the cat for about a week after I cut off the muffler, I decided to cut off the cat too. Smells better know. It's not loud at all if you retain the cat. You will get attention w/o a cat. I want 6" stacks, no muffler, no cat!

No cat, no muffler. I took everything off to begin with, got a magnaflow, or something like that, to keep the noise down a little. I liked the sound w/o a muffler, but I was trying not to tick everyone off. Hated the muffler, so I took it off. It's LOUD, but I like it. I don't even notice it on the highway.

I kept the cat, ditched the muffler. It was pretty loud with a load on at highway speed. Put a turn down on it to keep all the soot off the fender and bumper and quieted it down in the cab alot.

I left the cat alone, got the delete pipe from PRM outlet.com

Very pleased. I had always thought the 2nd Gens sounded better, but now that I did my new one, I think I like the rumble of this one more!
Some here say that losing the cat is the needle that broke the camel's back (noise level wise)

No gains in MPG or HP that I know of.

just a side question here.. anyone running an rpmoutlet or geno's delete pipe, was the factory muffler able to just be cut out, or did the factory crimps have to be loosened for the install?

I just did mine ('05) last week with the muffler delete pipe from RPM Outlet.

I removed and re-used the factory clamps. The muffler is a bear to get off, because the clamps actually crimp the pipes together. I cut slots in the muffler inlet /outlet pipes with my air cut off tool, then spread them open with the air chisel. You may be able to do this without air tools, but I use air for everything..

The delete pipe is easy to install, it took all of 5 minutes to put on after 45 minutes removing the muffler. The one from Genos includes a hanger, the RPM one is just the pipe. It seems ok to me without the hanger, but I may add one for longevity.

I was surprised that it was as quiet as it was after I finished. It does get a little "boomy" in the cab under load, and I'm considering adding the Aero 4040 or 4040L (with resonator) muffler. If anyone has experience with these on a 2005 I'd like to hear about it. Outside it sounds great, but unfortunately I do all of my driving from the inside.

I understand that the 2006 has an extra resonator at the rear, so you may not need / want anything additional.

I also installed an AEM Brute Force intake at the same time, and took out the silencer ring. The intake was so loud (like a 747 taking off) that I couldn't hear the exhaust... I eventually put the silencer ring back in. This combo (Brute Force + Silencer Ring) works great, nice whistle - no 747!

So far I don't see any change in mileage, but I get a lot less smoke when I stomp on the peddle, leading me to believe that the turbo is spooling faster.

Best of luck with your upgrades.

Just did this also last week. I keep the cat on for warranty reasons, it's not worth the hasle if you need to take it in. The truck actually sounds perty good now, no gains that I see just noise. I would recomend a strait pipe and if you don't like it you have options of other after market mufflers that are still better than your oem muff. It was a royal PITA to get the old muff off but took 2 minutes to put the new pipe on. I used band clamps and it's perty solid. Have fun.

the trucks I have heard with out the muffler dont sound any louder to me.

why spend 400+ on a new 4" exhaust when you already have one. spend the 65 and get the same effect. then spend the rest on a intake, part of a turbo, wheel......

Deleted the muffler kept the cat. Love it. Had the local muffler guy do it with a straight piece of 4" pipe. $80 out the door.

How far to the rear is the resonator? I always thought they were installed right after the down pipe.

I don't have any drone now, but when I get rid of my muffler I might. I'll be replacing it with a 4” Banks muffler. I’m hoping installing the new muffler right after the down pipe will stop any drone.

A friend of mine has an 05 4dr LB DRW and cut the exhaust off right before the kitty and it is loud as hell. Only complaint is on the highway running 70mph it seems to give all passengers a headache while only ridin for half an hour. It just depend on how loud you want your truck.
