When changing a cam, how much more work to change tappets?
Yeah, no need is an understatement haha..
When my tech was putting in my cam he was explaning to me about the tappets and i was like what the hey..
They pretty much gotta go in throught the bottom of the engine, remove the oil pan, yeah its a job and then some..

To get to the tappets you have to have the motor this open, the pistons and rods do not need to be out as they are in this picture, and the crank brackets can still be intact, but you have to get to it from the bottom of the motor, no question about it.
Actually you can change the tappets without removing the oil pan or removing the engine from the truck.
Been there done that.
Just the tappet change alone was several hours not including all the time it takes to remove all the parts to get the cam out.
You only need a pipe cut in half long ways, a string, a cork or rubber stopper and a long stick with a hook on it.
Getting the tappets back into their homes is kind of tricky to say the least. Heck the whole job is tricky. Takes a steady hand and some good timing to get that stopper through the right hole in the block especially since the engine sits at an angle in the truck.

I did the same I pulled # 5intake bacaus the cam was beat up. But i was not so luckey I droped mine in the oil pan.. That was alot of fun let me tell you. Oh yea all to find out the tappet was in great shape these tappets are extreamly strong
