What is the K31 in the PDR towing twins?

What is up with this turbo. I did a search (titles only) for just "k31" and did not find that much. I did read that a k31 does not mean one specific size turbo. What is the scoop?

Thanx.

That is what the Aroura 5000 is based off of.
It is very popular in many towing twins and that is what II uses in one of their twin set ups too.

What highway diesel is that turbo used on if any? I know the s300 comes from a cat 3126.

The K31 is a light duty version of an s400 for all intents and purposes. The compressor side is a very efficient CNC machined aluminum turbine.

The Aurora 5000 uses a non-wastegated exhaust housing with an 0.80 A/R

The K31 is a wastegated turbo in stock form with a 1.28 A/R single volute wastegate (at least the one sitting beside me is) and the II towing twins use a Wastegated housing but I'm not sure if it is this size but it could be...The A5000 exhaust housing weighs around 10 pounds the Wastegated one weighs over 30 pounds.

I got mine brand new for $300 on Ebay. A non wastegated housing was $450 including the matching T-4 ATS exhaust manifold....trick.

Thanx for all the info guys. 30 pounds, that is crazy heavy. Seems like it would rip the bolts out of the bottom of the manifold. Maybe there is a bracket to help with support.

I would assume it would have a support if it is in a compounds configuration..but I have not seen the II compounds that close myself.

What do you mean by A/R? Other than the weight savings, are there any other reasons to go with a A5000 over a stock k31?

The a5k will bolt up to your stock manifold, a K31 in stock form will not.

A/R is the area over the radious, IIRC. Basically the bigger the A/R the slower it is gona be to spool and with a factory A/R of 1.28 you would have to be runnin crazy fuel to get it to spool. Thats why the the A5k has a 0.80, and I THINK that is roughly equivilant to a 14cm exhaust housing.

Good to know. Do you know the A/R of a stock s300? I'm think of trying to switch in to a stock s300.
