Wait for the ATS MST or SPS 66 turbo
 
ATS has been dragging their feet when it comes to the MST. It sounds like a great turbo but I want to see it run first. I've also heard bad things about ATS. Is the SPS 66 the way to go? I don't want to stud my motor just yet I just want a turbo that will keep up with the mods I want. Need your professional opinion.

have you called ats and asked about a price for the mst? for what they quoted me, i could have bought BD twins. sounds like a nice turbo, BUT $3400? not me.

So your saying SPS 66? Didn't know it was that expensive. That sounds like a rediculous price for a turbo. I'm thinking "Super Phat Shaft".

As long as you have the fuel to spool it, and don't mind a little lag, the SPS is a great turbo from what I've been reading.

Super B Special from BD is going to work well. Still going to have fairly good bottom end throttle response and great top end flow. Going to work up to about 575hp. They are also the only aftermarket turbo that can offer a one year factory Borg Warner Warranty.

Cool! Needs some info on it. What kind of boost does it produce? At what CFM? What kind of lag does it have? Is it a good all around turbo? Good for racing? Good for towing. Any info would be appreciated

Well, i have pegged the boost guage (60+ lbs.) with the tst on 5/3 and edge on level 3. You can manage the boost with a milder tst setting, like 3/1 or 2/1 and get boost #'s up to 50 ish. In all actuallity, with the tst over 3/3 my rail drains to 15,000 psi after 2 secs or so. it seems that with the stock fueling, to maintain 20,000+ rail pressure, I need to run it at like 3/2 or less.

Spoolup is around 1400-1500 rpms, you need to drive a little differently. I am a truck driver and am used to running on the lower side of the powerband. To keep this turbo singing, you need to drive it at the upper end of the powerband to maintain spoolup. When the thing hits the spoolup rpms, hang on. I have had the pedal mashed in 5th gear going about 30-35, and broke the tires loose on the highway once it starts screaming. Be very careful in the rain :)

Towing - I have towed 15,000+ trailers and had no problem at all. the one thing i did finally see is the turbo surging if I tried to tow up an incline at say 55 in 6th. The rpms are too low to keep the turbo spooling. So i drove at 55-60 in 5th gear. Surge problem solved. EGTS were great in either gear. no worries there.

drag Racing - It is good to go. In my 6 speed, I run out of fuel in the rail after the 1/8 mile mark. That will be addressed in the spring.

Street playing / racing - it is a blast to drive. I have scared people by the spoolup of the turbo alone. They swear it sounds like a plane is next to them. It is fun in light to light action.

It is an all around fun turbo. just a touch laggy but more than makes up for it on the big end :D

Will it work well with an auto? If so, it sounds like it would be perfect.

Honestly, you may want to go with a sps62 with the auto. From what I see, you do not have any mods done yet. You are gonna need a smarty or a tst pmcr to help spool the sps66. If you are going all out, then I'd say go with the 66. The safer bet is the sps62 for an auto. It will be much more streetable in a near stock application.

What are your plans for this truck?

IMHO the 66 is better with an auto than standard (you don't lose anything on the shifts). I like mine. E7 hit the nail on the head when he talked about driving habits. I.E. keeping it spooled up, preventing turbo bark and keeping fuel in the rail. Since I started running the Smarty the lag off the line is WAY less.

Right now I'm doing my research. This forum has been a great help. CTD possibilities are endless. I'm going with an ATS TC and VB first. Then I need a programmer. I initially wanted to go with the Edge Juice w/Attitude, but from what I've read I think I want a TST or a Smarty. Then a FASS, a modded CP3, and a bigger turbo with the ATS manifold. I want an 8,000lb truck that will pull with the best of them and still smoke those rice burners with trash can mufflers.

if you are going with all those mods, get upgraded input/output shafts on that tranny or you will be breaking parts with all that power. Do it right, and you'll do it just once. skip the shafts and you'll become a bitter man.

I have the silver bullet (sig). I had the stock turbo before that. iwould estimate that you would definetly need an aggressive fuelling box and a built tranny or clutch. With that said the silver bullit made y truck a rocket ship. It lights up quickly and it doesnt seem to have a ceiling

My sps66 is VERY laggy with the boxes turned off....
