Turbo for Tow rig/daily driver Need advice.
Turbo for Tow rig/daily driver Need advice.
First off, here is my truck: 06 4dr shortbox 2500, 3.73 gears, auto trans, Factory Jacobs exhaust brake, Volant cold air intake with ram air, stock 4" with freeflow muffler, Edge Juice box with attitude programmer.
I tow on a biweekly basis (19K on the scale GCVW) and the truck is a daily driver. The truck will do anything I demand of it including 70mph up 6% grade, full load with Edge on #2 setting if I let the EGT's climb past 1300. I don't do this but have just to see what the truck would do (very impressive "IF" I could actually use it all)...... All the power and torque is right there in that programer I just need to be able to release it under real world situations.
My big question is this: I know that adding an aftermarket turbo will greatly inprove my ability to use the programmer (I would love to use the #3 setting on the edge "widest power range" to tow with and be able to carry 60-65 up 4-6% grades without having to worry about EGT's). Does anyone have any suggestions on Turbo's that will be smooth, cut EGT's enough and also work well as a daily driver. NOT LOOKING FOR TWINS OR A RACE TURBO.
The big problem I am finding is I want to keep the stock Jacobs brake so a Super B is out and a few others.
Does anyone know if the Sps6280 turbo will work and allow me to keep the Jacobs Brake? What about Auroroa turbo's or any others? Other suggestions?
I would really like to here from someone actually running with my similer setup.
Pro's vs Con's doe's and dont's, regrets.........
Not looking for hearsay or rumor. I am trying to make a real informed decision before I jump.

I fully recommend the 6280,, wonderful turbo. I have a 13k 37' 5'er. I can pull that unit up any hill, never worry about egt's anymore, unless I really rag on it in 3rd. Last summer I was going up 9% grades with it, no problem

So you have the SPS6280... Do you know if it will bolt up with the stock Jacobs brake? Anything you don't like about it?
How about some real numbers..... How much you wiegh on the scale, what are your EGT's at 65mph up a 6% grade.
Would I need to upgrade anything other than the turbo?
What would you do different if you did it again?
Thanks for any help: Joe

im not sure about the jacobs brake, but I would think so. My trailer is 13k dry. and it is a 5th wheel so it has great wind resistance. I have yet to go over 1200 unless I drop into drive and over rev, then it will hit 1350. but that was when I was trying to keep at 70mph on a 9% grade. On a 6% grade I dont come out of overdrive and it sits around 1100 1200. As far as upgrades you should have a bigger exhaust a 4" all the way back, and a better air intake is allmost a must. So you should be set with what you have. You will love this turbo I promise

What setting are you running your Juice on when you tow?
What kind of daily driver will this turbo make?
Who actually make the SPS turbo line?
Oh, the 06 dose have 4" exhaust all the way back. I just ditched the stock muffler and put a free flow muffler inline to open it up.

they are made by a company called Industrial Injection. I run my juice on 5,, I like lots of power. I dont like to be slowed down by much. I have run this turbo with no power adders and it is slightly laggier than stock, but still very nice, no appreciable lag. As for your exhaust you will be fine

n2dwild: I posted about the sps6280 turbo in response to your question on the BD Power forum but I see my post disappeared, I guess its a competition thing. From what I have been able to find out the turbo will bolt up to your jacobs brake, but a call to Industrial injection should answer all your questions about bolt up issues. This will be the turbo I use when I upgrade, at that is the plan for now.

Needless to say I won't be on BD's site anymore. I was told that the posts were moderated because on their forum they only want talk about "their" products. How is a guys suppose to get non bias information about Diesel performance on a forum like that when all everyone can talk about is "BD" stuff???? Disappointing.
Anyway, it has lead me to this forum which is a good thing and seems to be a wealth of info so that is good. It has also given me a little information about how BD operates.

I have the Aurora 3000. I haven't towed with it yet (stupid snow) but, it is a good daily driver. I am sure I will like it for towing as well. I am worried about you though. Don't mean to change the subject, but, you said you were wanting to run the higher settings on the juice. You are going to need at least a TC and VB for that transmission to pull 19klbs up a 6% grade with an extra 70-90hp.
Ideal situation would be to use the juice on #3 and tow 18-19K lbs without having to worry about EGT's on 4-6% grades. I don't run 70mph when towing this waight but would like to be able to hold 60-65 up long grades without having to worry about EGT's. I don't have any plans to tow in anything higher than the #3 setting on the Juice. The #3 setting just seems to have the most rounded, broad and usable power range according to the charts. My truck also seems to run and tow nicely with that setting other than the EGT's on long grades.
I have heard that the 48RE is a very good trans. I am not a hot rod driver nor do I inted to be raceing up hills with peddle down to the floor. I just want to be able to run the speed limit on the interstate, hills or no hills.
This is good info to know from some of you who do tow heavy the the 48RE. Does this trans hold up under real world situations (not beating on it but driving sane).
I have heard that just dropping a valve body in it will insure good life out of this trans. I do have plans for that and an aluminum pan when the first trans fluid change pops up. It's almost due. I have less than 15K on the truck now. I also have plans for an aluminum Diff cover at 15K miles when I do the first diff change. Any recommendations on fluids?

The weakest link of the 48re is the torque converter. A valve body alone would help some as it would increase the pressure being applied to the converter. However, I still think that with your intended use you are on borrowed time with the converter. You may get lucky and get quite a few miles out of it. The problem is, that as that baby wears, it is sending all those particles into the rest of the tranny. I really suggest limiting your increased power to around 40-50hp with a 19k lbs load. That probably means level 1 or maybe level 2 with a bigger turbo. Trust me, a torque converter is a very valueable investment. Just look at the expense as insurance. You are paying $1200 to ensure that you won't have to spend $3500 a year from now. You will also find that the converter will be an improvement in towing anyway. The truck will opperate more in its power range at highway speeds.
I concur with that statement, a torque convertor would be a wise wise investement for the kind of towing that you do,, and if you can spare the bucks do the vb at the same time, you wont be sorry. I think then you would be able to tow on 5 with that new turbo, with a big smile on your face
