I like my Cool Engine Shutdown with my X-monitor. It idles the engine until the EGTs get below a certain amount (adjustable). So if I just go up the street to the store, it might idle for 15-30 seconds, but if I'm driving hard in traffic with the AC on it may idle for 2-3 minutes. Auto cuts off at 5 minutes, but I have never seen 'er idle that long, even on a 100° day.

What about the SP Diesel timer?? The pic just shows a box. Does it also come with a remote dial or button or something like the howards? I like the Howards, but like I said before, I dont like the 2 min. minimum on it, wish it had like a 30 or 45 sec. option, or even a 1 min. time. Are there any other cool-down timers out there??

I've got SP diesel's timer. It works ok. Instructions are extremely vague. I had to email back and forth with them to get wiring right. It does have a **** for infinite time adjustments.... I'd say anywhere from 15 seconds to 15minutes. You set it and forget it. If someone gets in your truck to try to steal it, the brake pedal shuts off the truck. Nice feature. Has a good sized relay and wiring for 30amps. Not bad for the money. Just some minor issues with mine and with the company in general.

I am sure that Howard could probably reset or make a custom time. He has other
timers for other equipment with shorter and longer time intervals.

Isspro makes a turbo temp monitor that I have and works well. it hooks to the EGT probe and shuts the engine down on the temp you set it at. And it was fairly cheap.

Thanks "DR3500", that sounds pretty cool, I planned on getting a set of ISSPRO's anyway. Would you happen to have a link or something?

My SP Timer works great, I have had zero issues with it. Just set the dial on the small **** you mount on the dash and forget it. You don't have to arm the timer every time you get out of the truck like you do with the Howard's timer, just set it and forget it.

I called up Isspro about the EGT monitor, He told me being that Im not really doing heavy towing, that I might not get the turbo hot enough for it to even work. He said the min. temp. was 300 degrees. I gotta say, at least he was honest, and didn't try and tell me otherwise to get a sale out of me, That little chip is alot of money. Next phone call will be to SP Diesel to get some info about theres.

They say 300F PRE-turbo. I would set it to 270F PRE-turbo as the temps can climb 20-30F after shutdown due to HEAT SINK. This would then bring it to the safe zone of 300F...

I have the isspro unit,,, ssswwwweeeetttt,, you can set the temp for whatever you want. nothing inside to have to mount to your dash. I bought it at www.dieslemanor.com. good price too.

there is alot of discussion as to what the right temp for shutdown is,, the isspro unit comes from the factory set to 300,, I set mine for around 375,, really though anything under 400 is safe,,, 350 is probably ideal,, but it takes alot of fuel to get it there sometimes

Timer

What about just buying an alarm for your truck... I just purchased a system produced by DEI and it had remote start, cool down timer that can be set for different intervals from the remote... I love it!! It may cost a little more than a stand alone timer but you get alot more with the system. I believe it's the Avital 4300 alarm system. Do a search of the Avital on the forum.

Howards is the most reliable from what I've heard but since you have no mods listed....get a TST with cool down feature......Uses both time and temperature to turn the truck off...I love it as it is so quick to engage. ks

It depends where in the manifold you put the probe.
Mine is just before the collected area, on top near where the two sections meet.
When fully cooled down the lowest I see is 320ish, usually shut down around 350-360 if it hasnt been a long pull.
Post turbo EGTs will be MUCH lower.
Also just where the probe is in the manifold makes a difference as well.

On my '97 it was just above the turbo on the collector, and I saw 220*-230 when fully cool.(The larger turbo also had something to due with it, but still there will be a difference based on location) I think the location on my '05 is why im seeing slightly higher numbers(even when cool/start up) since its pretty close to 1(and another) cylinder(s).

For me, I wanted an alarm with remote start/turbo timer, but right now I cant justify the money(nor have it to spend at the moment)
More than likely ill go with the Howard unit due to the timed shutdown vs some of the other temperatured shut down units(of which some arent adjustable, or preset to a lower temp than ill ever see with the current probe location). After a long hual ill let it sit longer, but ive never had the truck hot enough to need to cool down for more than 2-3 minutes so again a timed unit works out good for me.
Ill probably order Howards unit here in a week or two.
