Turbo Bark " how bad is it"
I sometimes hear a strange air back fire in my engine compartment what ive been told is turbo bark, Im clueless to how this has started or why??. How bad is this and will it screw up my turbo.

I could be WAAAY off but what I have heard is that yes it is pretty bad on your turbo I guess whats happening is the air is trying to force the compressor to go in the opposite direction now as for how bad and if this is true im not sure but I think its caused when your higher with boost then letoff the gas really quick or push in the clutch those are the times I have heard it.
What can i do to prevent this with controlling my heavy foot. do i need some kindof upgrade and what??
The actual term is turbo surge. It is caused by the air trying to go backwards (coming back from the I/C) and being met by the incoming air (from the air box). The only ways that I know to keep it from happening is to change your driving style or buy a bigger turbo. You might be able to get rid of it by changing the I/C or putting larger diameter piping between the compressor housing and I/C.
I/C you mean inter cooler right? ok so a new turbo might be a possible fix but pricey.
is your truck a manual or auto?? When does it occur??
a larger turbo will bark worse not better(wanna hear mine?) due to the inertia of the larger(heavier) wheels and shaft. takes longer for boost to drop off.
the only ways to stop it is gently coming off the accelerator or installing a BOV. larger piping or I/c will not help. |

How would you go about installing a Blow Off Valve that will not open during boost and acceleration,
but WOULD in fact Blow Off excess pressure when backing out of the throttle????? |
no, the bov's for our diesels are tied into the throttle position circuit. i would then know when you are getting off the pedal quickly, and be able to adjust for it. it is different than a relief valve.
Mine started "barkin" after I removed my silencer ring and gutted my intake - but it only does it if I let off the go pedal really fast after getting into it hard - so I just make sure I let off the pedal easier - an no bark.
i dont think it started to bark then. you just couldnt hear it before. the silencer and baffles really stop any sound from coming out.

my 04.5 barked after i put the bullydog on. i couldnt get it to bark on stock fueling.
Regardless, i can safely say i barked my stock turbo 100+ times and that truck still ran like mad. |
