Transmission Cracked?
Transmission Cracked?
I have a 3500 and the piece in the middle where the tranny and transfercase connect has cracked on the transmission side.. can this be welded? and what is this piece called? and whats in it? tail shaft?
theres only 220ok on this thing and no chip what would make it crack like this?

When they pulled my tranny to replace it my case was cracked in I believe the same place. They didnt really have an explanation for why it was that way. But I tell you what we had a heck of a time getting the tranny and transfer case apart...Ohio and Michigan winters do a number on these trucks.
The crack on my case was pretty small maybe 1/4-1/2" right where it bolted to the transfercase. We noticed it as we were unbolting the transfer case.

Hi. in my Opinion a cracked tranny should never be welded it should just be replaced. i have welded a cracked bellhousing before but what will happen is the weld will create a weak spot all aroud the weld. I aluminum used in transmission/trasfer cases is not a very good aluminum to be welding on. That is a tricky decision but you want to be carful if you do go ahead and weld it. it could cost you more money then you bargained for.
