Tranny Oil Alternatives

Have been running Pennzoil Synchromesh oil in my 6 speed tranni for years with no problems, but need to top the tranni up due to a leak. Am guessing that one or even 2 quarts will be enough. Lots of Pennzoil products available locally - except for the Synchromesh. Not planning any trips north of the border in the near future and it is too expensive to have some shipped down to me, so need a plan B.

Other than going to the dealer for their overpriced oil, what alternative oil can I safely put in this tranni? Can this oil be safely mixed with what is in there now or is it necessary to drain all the old oil and fill with new?

Tried a search, but nothing came up.

Update; discovered this article; http://www.allpar.com/fix/gear-oil.html . Comments?

As per my signature, the 6 speed manual. Or if you prefer, the NV5600 Or the HEE.

Can't see the sig on my phone. 03-05 is the NV5600 and the 05.5+ is the G56, that's why i was asking. I can't help you with the NV5600 though.

Still battling my oil problem and still cannot find a supplier of the Pennzoil Synchromesh that I am presently using. The local Pennzoil dealer does not stock this oil. I can import some of this oil, but it is becomes quite expensive plus to bring fluids across the border is complicated.

Have re-read that link that I posted earlier and can see no reason not to drain the good Pennzoil that is presently in my transmission and refill it with Mobile 1 synthetic extreme performance 15,000 mile 5w30. This oil is easy for me to get locally.

Anybody see any problems if I do this?

Reading the sidebar in that article, I gathered in the long run there may be some synchro problems. I wonder if a bottle of limited slip additive would alleviate that problem? It is my understanding that the NV5600 has fiber synchros. I have read on the forums where guys have added the limited slip additive with good results.

Trying to find someone that is driving down from the states and can bring me a couple of quarts of Pennzoil. Lots of folks flying down, but will not ask them to try to bring liquid with them on the plane. Normally I go up to the states once or twice a year, but have no reason to go at the moment as I can get pretty well anything that I need - except this oil.

Am almost to the point of breaking down and going to the dealer and buying enough of their expensive oil and do a complete oil change.

Last week went to one of the local 5 star Dodge dealers and tried to buy the recommended oil for this transmission. They do not stock that oil and after the parts guy consulted with the parts manager who consulted with the service manager, he came back and told me that for that for the NV5600 transmission that they install ATF4. Told them that is not correct and asked for some sort of document that proved this and they could not produce anything. They asked for the VIN which I did not have with me.

Next step was to contact Dodge in the States and gave them the story. Asked them what is the recommended oil for this truck. Here is their response:

Thank you for contacting the FCA Customer Assistance Center in regards to your oil inquiry.

As you are located in Mexico, the most appropriate direction would be to
contact Mexico Customer Care as they would be best suited to address any
further concerns for questions you may have.

Wrote back and told them that their answer was pure garbage. "The most appropriate direction...????" This is a simple technical question that has nothing to do with what country the vehicle is located in, so why could they not tell me what type of oil to use instead of trying to make their customer jump through unnecessary hoops. And they wonder why this customer does not take his vehicle to Dodge to get any work done?

Update. Received another non answer from Dodge;

Thank you for your response.

I apologize you are unhappy with the response provided.

We simply cannot provide technical information as our we rely on our
dealerships for a trained technical opinion. They are our technical eyes
and ears therefore are in the best position to provide the most accurate
information. As you are currently in Mexico, U.S. Customer Care cannot
provide the assistance required as each area is specified to handle and
address concerns based on location for contact purposes. If you require
an English speaking representative and happen to not receive one, simply
just request one.

Moving forward any future communication will be retained in your file.

Could someone in the US with a 2003 2500 and with the NV5600 please send an email to Dodge and ask what is the correct oil to use? Or maybe also check with a dealer and see what they say. I am sure that it is not ATF4 that has been suggested by my local dealer or on anther site that I checked. Not sure, but think that the Dodge part numbers for this oil are 4874464 or 4761526

On a bottle of Amsoil Synchromesh it list the following specs & part numbers:

SPECS Part#
GM 9985648 GM 12345349 or 12345577
GM 9986105 GM 12377916
GM 9985535 GM 1052931
Chrysler MS-9224 Chrysler 4874464
Chrysler MS-9417 Chrysler 4874465

The owners manual for my 2002 NV5600 calls for P/N 4874464 as the only lube recommended for the NV-5600.
