Torque tube
Torque tube
I was thinking about making my own torque tube. I was thinking about maybe pvc, but it might melt. Is metal or aluminum about the only thing I could use to make my own? What are the pros and cons of a torque tube?

using metal or alumium will make the air even hotter!
People have hollowed out the "baffles" fromt the stock torque tube. DO a search and you can find out a lot of info. All it really does is make the turbo whistle louder, and maybe lower egt's. no noticable gains. Someone on here made there own out os some metal tubing, I think aluminum. Ill let you know if I find it.

The only gain is increased turbo noise, outside of that they don't do anything. I used 2 4" rubber intake elbows and about 10" of aluminum 4" intake pipe to make mine.

Aluminium is bad since over time it will corrode internally. Since the tube is fairly close to the exhaust manifold I wouldn't trust rubber/silicone or pvc. I replaced mine with a piece of hydraulic cyclinder internally chrome plated steel tube 5.25 Dia. by 6.25 long with a wall thickness of 1/8". Just spotted a piece of stainless 5" sch 10 pipe on the job that is going to find it's way under the hood
The gains can be argued on the side of less restricted airflow and more turbo whistle.

look at link thread - it is the BHAF filter install.. tells you where to get all the pieces you would need..

The MPC eliminator is a piece of properly sized CERAMIC COATED steel pipe. For those that keep up with such things the coating is heat reflective and also insulates the pipe to keep the heat OUT. It is for sound and LOOKS. Some folks like to make there truck look a little better under the hood, before someone flames for adding Bling Bling under the hood! If you sell your truck you have the stock piece to put back in.
I guess I don't really see the big deal of what has to be a minimal heat gain when it's pre-intercooler. And with the airflow moving through the engine bay, I can't believe that it's gaining much heat at all. My 2 cents.

I built mine for about 100 filter and all. I used a 45* exhaust elbow and made two cuts and it came out perfect. The only gain like stated before will be sound - I built my own cuz I love fabricating! Here is a sneak peak:
