Tire and wheel combo

How much does it matter for fittment on the wheels when the wheel is 9" and tire might be 8". I know most of the tire companies post a recommended wheel size but what's up with that. One company i seen had suggested a 9" wheel for there tire and for the same tire one size larger it suggested an 8" wheel?????? ***? What can we go with here. Tire i want they say 7.5 to 9" wheel and recommeneded is 8", but the wheel i want is 9.5" Am i pushing this to much or can it work.

Also while i am ranting or learning possibly, what is the difference on load range on tires when one is rated E with a weight of 3195lbs and one size bigger they go to a load of D rating with the same weight 3195lbs. What is the difference hear also. I never did check out what the stock bfg's are for load rating what is on our trucks - 2500.

Within reason you can run tires on wider than optimal wheels. They will probably squirm less but will make the edge of the wheel more vulnerable to damage from hitting curbs or rocks. You might have to run slightly more pressure to make them wear in the middle and not just the outside edges, but an extra 1/2 inch, as in your example, is no big deal.

As far as a larger D rated carrying the same as the smaller E rated is concerned, the E rated will have a stronger sidewall. They will be the same number of plies (2 or 3) but stronger plies. So the E might be better for less sidewall damage and very high torque loads.

Many of us have been running D rated tires because they were either cheap (H2 takeoffs) or because the E was not available in the size and tread pattern we wanted. Now I've decided to stay with Es but I ran Ds for about 110,000 miles and carried all the weight I wanted to. The tire shop told me they never see the E rated Toyo 285/75 with sidewall damage and they feel very stiff when comparing them to others before mounting.
