Timing Mod and Injector Clean-up
Timing Mod and Injector Clean-up
I am one of the people that has white smoke and a rough idle at start-up. It was stated some where that the advanced timing would help clean the injectors and make this problem go away. Has anyone found this to be true? I have only loged about 300 miles since the install and have not noticed any improvement. Thank you for all your input it is greatly appreciated!!!

I had the rough idle and white smoke all through the summer while it was hot and humid. Once the overnight temps got cold enough for the grid heater to cycle completely (15-20sec) this condition/phenomena has quit. Leads me to believe that it may have been a cold cylinder condition; at least in my truck.
This is what I've noticed and not noticed since I've done the tone wheel mod on my truck about 10 days ago. She definitely pulls off the low end better. Starting out in 2nd with no throttle is like 1st with no throttle used to be! I even did a 3rd gear no throttle start and she just dug and pulled off like nothing. The engine is not any louder or quieter, but I had a quiet/good idling truck from the get go. The exhaust is a bit more throaty though. I like that. I have not noticed any mileage increase or a reduction in EGT's like some have said.
What do you all think are the machining tolerances on the tone wheel. I filed off a little over 1/16th but not quite 3/32nds and I'm touching the bolts holes. Is that right. Seems I recall some guys going much further before touching. Anyhow my truck seems to do well with it even with the Edge Juice up to level 4. No knocking or pinging. That's my report!!

I encountered the white smoke on start up with around 4k on the truck. The modified crank sensor did not cure the problem. It made it some what better. I have used the PS/MMO mix most ever tank. I even stopped using it for a couple of tanks to see if it made a difference. With the grid heater now operable most mornings the smoke with away along with the misfire condition. Over the last little while temps have come back up and the smoke/miss came back.
I switched brands of diesel. When I switched to nothing but Chevron the problem has yet to reoccur. Temps have been back up in the upper 70's to low 80's over parts of the last week and still acts normal on cold start up.

Have you had the dealer flash done. TSB for smoke on start up and recalibrate overhead fuel monitor. It worked on my truck. I also did the tone ring mod with the same results smoother idle better low end but no fuel mileage increase.
