Stock Turbo w/ Basic Mods vs. BD Super B Single Turbo
I'd like to hear what kind of significant difference there is to be gained (seat of the pants - don't care about numbers) by changing out my stock turbo to a BD Super B Single. I have the basic mods (listed in sig) and like the idea of a nice turbo upgrade. I'm not looking to beat any Dodge Vipers, just want a little more "push-me-back-in-the-seat" performance.
From doing some reading it sounds like it spools up quicker and holds a higher boost. I know the very basics on turbos and know the smaller the turbo the quicker it spools, but less on the top end; and just the opposite for larger turbos. Is it Porsche that came out with the variable geometry turbine so you have the best of both worlds? Anyway, that's for a different lifetime. It also appears in need to upgrade my fueling. What exactly does that mean? A larger fuel pump? And of course intercoolers go hand-n-hand with turbos, so must the intercooler be upgraded as well? And last - the Banks High Ram intake (I think that's what it's called). I've had one performance shop tell me it's a must have, and another performance shop tell me it's all fluff and basically just looks pretty. Thoughts? |
I will say that that turbo most likely will not spool up as fast as stock. It would help if you had maybe a hot juice and a fuel system like the FASS or GDP. The high ram intake is junk and wont add much if anything. I have twins on my truck and im still on the stock intercooler and doing fine.

The Super B will spool just as fast as stock if not faster. It will hold 42psi at the same EGT as the stocker will hold 32psi. The super B will peak at 47psi. This turbo will support 450hp at comfortable EGTS and no studs. A good 62/12 will hold 48psi and move a larger volume of air and will make up to 550hp. Between 450 and 550 hp BD has the Special Super B. If you have more air potential than fueling everyday you will suffer from low boost levels, more smoke and worse fuel economy. If your hp desire is moderate upto 450hp max than the Super B is a nice turbo. If you are looking at 450 to 550 hp then a Special Super B or good 62/12 is the ticket. If you are looking at over 550hp then a good 64 or 66 is required. If you want to go over 650hp then a special 66 or 68 , an Aurora 5000 or a set of Compound turbos are required. This is pretty well boiler plate info that you can count on. I see on here a thousand times where someone wants to make 450hp and tow and they put on a silver bullet and are unhappy or break something. Buy the best turbo with the best warranty for the power you want to make and the purpose your truck is to be used for. There is always someone who will cheat the diesel Gods and make 100hp more with a specific turbo than someone else but usually their luck doesn't last long. Good luck, ks

Good post Yew. Why aren't there any exhaust housing upgrades available for the stock turbo like there were with the 2nd gens? I'd love it if I could lower egts a little more without paying for an all new turbo.

ABC, very informative post, thank you.....
So at 610 motor with GDP + Smarty Level 9 = 280hp + 170 Smarty = 450hp +/-....so right on the border.... I don't tow much, but wouldnt want to loose the capability....thoughts? Doest the 62/12 require studs at around 450hp? |
Most turbo companies set the wastegates between 40 and 48psi to be used with the stock head studs and lots of trucks make over 450hp with these turbos so the answer is no head studs aren't required until you make over 48psi. The stock turbo is pretty durable up to its max boost 32psi '03-04 or about 36psi '04.5 to 07. The limit on the turbo versus power is typically the EGT's. If you can keep the EGT's under 1250 to make your power than all will be good. To rate a turbo you really do need some specifications such as at 40psi turbo will flow 1000cfm or at least a lbs of air with cfm. A turbo efficiency map is a good thing to look at. There is a post on here from a Super B owner stating the Super B as pumping something like 61lb/min of air with 900cfm. Pat, Kantdrive55 will be able to fill in all the details as he's on here and works for BD. I wish someone on here would spend their free time on getting the definitive specs on all the available turbos for comparison. All the Diesel mags offer nothing but junk info...no comparison guides for anything just manufacturer supported blurbs....too bad. ks

Great info, guys!
Having said all that, do those of you familiar with the BD Super B Single Turbo feel it makes enough difference over stock to justify the $1,600 price tag and anything else that goes along with it to make it work correctly? |
$1600.00!!!!?????, You can get that turbo for 1200.00 or less.:o

For the widest possible range of turbo vs. fueling mods, the 62 series from many different sources is the way to go. If you tow heavy, go with the 62/12 if not then a 62/14. Its what I have and make over 550hp now on fuel alone, run 12.5's in the 1/4mi, never have high egt problems and drive it daily with good lag time. I don't tow heavy, but regularly tow my Jeep Cherokee rock crawler at about 5-6000# I have no complaints while towing, and my avg. is about 15-17mpg and 20-23mpg unloaded.

Hey Lark
Funny picture thing. Whats the "S" stand for? SuperDuty or supositories.... Wait a minute. Same difference. I still have the same question. Why doesn't anyone offer different turbine housings for the stock turbo like they did for the 2nd generation trucks? I'd really like it if I could get a better egt reduction without spending 1300 on a new turbo. Thanks Ben |
