Stock intake really that bad?
Stock intake really that bad?
Hey all,
I was just under the hood checking the oil and noticed that my Minder was all the down
I checked out the filter and it looked OK so I thought maybe with the few things I've done (see sig) that the stock Intake Box just can't flow enough air????
I pulled the box and bored a 3" hole in the bottom, reset the Minder and went for a let's see test ride (same filter). Well...... the minder didn't close at all!! It looks like the stock box really is that BAD!
Anyone else have similar experience or do I have something else going on here??

Make that hole 4 inches and put an elbow and somepipe forward to get some cooler air and you won't believe it is the same truck...The best thing you can do for your truck is ventilate the stock air box and keep the filter clean. I wouldn't waste your time on a drop in oiled filter as the paper flows lots for up to 450hp or more. ks
I did the airbox mod about 1 month after getting my truck, WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MADE !!! At my first oil change, 3K, I dropped in the new Amsoil air filter (EaA189) and it was also a noticable difference. My dealership did not care whatsoever, in fact, the tech there said I did "the best thing any owner could do - get in more air and still have good filtering". He is sold on the Amsoil filter and so is the service manager. They are now doing the mod when customers ask about the minder problems and are considering doing it all the time when someone comes in for their first service work, offering it at a n/c labor, just parts - which are nominal in costs.

Stock is the best intake... IMHO. The latest Diesel Power mag did a comparo with all the intakes available and NONE of them provided any HP/TQ gains on a stock truck. Even then most guys here will tell you that until you get above 450HP the intake with a hole in the bottom will flow enough air and it filters good and is cool air. Run a 4" pipe from the bottom down and you will be all set. The best thing about and AFE or similar is the sound you get unless you have a 500HP truck then it will help. A BHAF will get you there as well.

Gee, that ought to make their advertisers happy..................not!
My truck sucked the filter minder all the way down on the way home from the dealership!
I think he did the right thing with swiss cheesing the air box.

with a stock truck, the filter minder will honestly show filter condition. with that quad race of yours, your turbo is pulling way more air(28psi compared to 40psi boost) that it will give a plugged indication just driving alittle spirited.
Sorry if my post was any confusion I was saying that on a stock tru the best intake is a STOCK one. With minor mods a 4" hole will suit you best if you want to keep it quite. BUT with big mods you will need more air no doubt about it but many people here will tell you that isn't till 450+hp. I thought it was nice to see an honest report as well! They also said that if the truck has other mods the story might be different.
Holy cow doo doo Bat Man!...... Went to sleep with 30 reads and no responces.... today 400+ reads and lots of talk.
Thanks for the answers guys. It sounds like I'm at least heading in the right direction. I'll run some tubing down for the cooler air and run it for a while. I'll do a serious intake after I get a few more miles on her, I hate the thought of having to pull everything off to go in for service. I'm sure I will though. My 96 is the only one out of 4 that didn't need to go in for something.
With more air going to keep her cool, should I see reduced EGT now?, or will I need to finish the exhaust first?

So...Would this be worth doing on a stock truck? Meaning, would I notice anything as far as more seat of the pants power, more noise, better mileage? Or is it better suited for a truck that has some work done to it with no intake?
