Still More Questions About EGT Install
I'm trying to get all the steps worked out in my mind about installing my EGT gauge before I actually start it.
I have decided to seperate the turbo from the exhaust manifold when I drill. So... 1. Is there a gasket between the turbo and exhaust manifold that has to be replaced? 2. Is there any kind of thread cement on the bolts that I need to put back on when I'm done? 3. What's the torque I should put on the bolts when I'm done and puting the turbo back on the exhaust manifold? Thanks |
There is a gasket between the turbo and exhaust manifold but I think it is metal and reusable. I don't know what the torque is on the bolts I am at work and don't have my cd shop manual its at home. I am sure somebody will reply to this but I will check when I get home. When I did mine I had my son holding a shop vac hose by the hole I was drilling sucking any shavings up. I greaded the tap up but still had a shop vac by it and did not have any problems. Theres not that much to worry about just do it.

According to the shop manual:
(8) Connect the exhaust pipe to the turbocharger and tighten the bolts to 34 N·m (25 ft. lbs.) torque. Hope that helps. |
I just completed that job and it is very easy. It is not necessary to remove the turbo if you are careful. I drilled the manifold first with an 1/8" bit until it was almost through. I then stuffed the exhaust pipe outlet with a rag and taped it in. I had a freind then start the engine. I finished the 1/8" hole and had high velocity exhaust gasses coming through the new hole. I changed bits to 7/16" and proceded to open the new hole to that diameter. The high velocity gasses blows the chips directly out. Wear safety glasses and a hat. I then tapped the hole to 1/4" NPT while the engine was running as well. You should stop the engine whenever you are not cutting as everything gets warm pretty **** quick.

I think covering the tailpipe is a good safe way to go. Just think about an exhaust brake, same diff. You're not gonna hurt anything.

Thanks for the tip about covering the exhaust pipe, guys! That sounds a lot easier and just as good as taking the turbo off. Thanks for the answers to my other questions too.:D
