stainless vs. aluminized
Is it really worth the extra for stainless steel? What will last the longest? What is the big difference between 304 and 409 stainless?
|
It is worth it if you live where it snows alot. The difference between 304 and 409 is the amount of iron content. 304 has less iron and more stainless steel content tnan 409. aluminized=good 409=better 304=best

If you live in a northern snowy climate aluminized will last approximately 4 years before it starts to rot out and come apart. 409 stainless will probably last as long as the truck, but will rust on the surface. Meaning it will look rusty, but wont rust through. 304 stainless on the otherhand won't rust. It will discolor, but not rust. 304 will definitly last as long as the truck.

I bought the 409 and I wish I would have spent the extra for the 304. I live in a fairly dry area and there is no salt (that I know of) on the roads, but the pipe is rusty looking. Pits all over. I don't expect it to rust through but it looks bad. When I complained I was told to "go under and polish it". [laugh] [eyecrazy] As with any stainless, when you get crevise corrosion started you really can't do too much about it short of buffing it clear out until the crevice is gone, or keep it away from corrosive environments, or keep it dry. The inside of the pipe may be even worse.

thanks
Thanks for the help. Does anyone know where i can get a stainless system with a five inch down pipe?
|
don't know about the 5" down pipe, never seen one before, but the last time i bought alum exhaust, it lasted me a whole year before it split at the seams, and then fell apart, a big waste of money since the stainless system was only like 200 more for the 304 system.

RPMOutlet.com has a 5" 409 system. I ordered one two months ago and it kept gettin backordered and delayed, found out it was coming from China and they had no idea when it would get here...in the meantime I notice it went up $100. They do have a nice 4" 409 system American made I bought. It went on real easy.

i put in a post the other day called motoblue asking about that kit and so far I have heard that RPMoutlet is not the company to be dealing with. Maybe you should check it out.

FWIW, my aluminized exhaust looks brand new yet. Not even a little surface rust. I installed it last fall, and have put on about 15k miles.

AbbeyNormal, if you want a 5" stainless system then you should consider a Magnaflow system. They are available NOW and they fit purfect. I just installed one on my 04.5 and I really like it. Be advised though, it is loud. Gives the truck that diesel sound like it should have. I ordered the one system without the tip at summit in the 650 price range. Many other places have it at that same price. Go to magnaflow web site and grab the part number and then search the web for best price. This is the lowest price I have found so far.
http://performancediesel.com/Merchan...ry_Code=DESFMF Don't look at the picture as it is wrong. Keep in mind most places charge about $50 FOR OVERSIZE SHIPPING FOR THESE KITS. Although at that site I think shipping is included!!(but they were out of stock when I checked 4 weeks ago,I called them) Also my system was brutally loud since it is designed to have a tip installed so the tail pipe is kinda short. I took the left over section of pipe(my truck was a short bed)and the extra clamp and made a slash cut tip out of it and extended the tailpipe about 5-6" and that made a HUGE difference in the cab. It was sweet since that piece of pipe came semi polished from magnaflow for some reason. |
I already installed the new 4" system. I am sure its all I'll ever need. I am really not wanting loud anyway, just better performance. When I was ordering back in the end of February, the 5" Moto Blue was only ~$500. Its gone up $100 more since then though. Back when it was $500, I could not resist it just for the 5" SS pipes even knowing then I wanted an AeroTurbine muffler.
