SPS 62 Finally Installed, Test Drive
SPS 62 Finally Installed, Test Drive
I hooked off work a little early and put on my II 62/71/14 turbo. Some of the turbo mount nuts were a little difficult and a Craftsman wrench had to be sacrificed and modified for the job. I should have listened when guys said to pull the oil drain pipe out completely because that back bolt is a major PITA
. The turbo immediately sounded different at idle. It reminded me of a CAT C-12 with a strait pipe. It has that nice whirrrlll sound now all the time
Anyway, it is noticeably slower to spool below 10-15 PSI but it was pretty minor. On SW9 Wild the smoke was manageable and had nice acceleration. The EGTs were just like the stocker cruising 30-40mph 12-1500 RPM. It was a LOT better than what I was expecting. I was fearing a smoke chugging, never spooling monster and it wasnt at all. On to the good stuff
I got her to temp and started to roll into it a little. I really like the sound of the turbo exhaust when you shift gears. It sounds like a 24v with a strait pipe, if you know what I mean. I came to a stop at the local "closed course for testing" and did a nice 15 PSI boosted launch. WOW!!! This thing pulls awesome all the way to 3500! It always felt flat once it hit 2700 but not now. I was very surprised. I dont know how much power it unleashed on the top, but it was lots. All in all, I think it was the best mod I have done to my truck, besides the Smarty. I dont know why I put it off for so long. I know this is nothing new to you guys here, but I am excited about the new found top end power and cant wait for the drags to open back up.

The EGT's were never an issue with me. There is a nice 8% grade for about 1 1/2 miles on my closed course that usually netted me 1050* and last night it was in the lower 9's, running about 20psi boost.
I know looking at the exhaust housing comparing the stocker to the SPS62 they are night and day different. I never realized how tiny the stock exhaust wheel was. I was getting bad boost creep and I knew with the TNT in the near future, I had to replace the turbo.
