southbend clutch
There are differences between the stock configuration and ANY after market clutch. Harder to push pretty much translates in harder to slip too. I mean, you have to have pressure on it to work.
Open invitation for anyone close enough to take me up on it, come drive my truck! It would be hard to deny at that point that it is a smooth operating clutch. As smooth as stock, no, but would my stock clutch hold 500+ HP for pretty much the life of the truck?.....no.

Also, I would check on your stock clutch being under warranty. I think the warranty on those is 12 months/12,000 miles. After that, its on your dime to replace. So that being said.
I would agree the majority have little to no problems with Southbend Clutches. Mine works great, and it is not hard to push into gear, just once and a while it does hang up and not want to shift into first/second, and then I apply the double clutch, and it works fine....
You can't have the drivability of the stock clutch/pressures with something that is going hold 650 HP +. Like I said, there is always going to be a little give and take....

$1800 installed - I don't think that's for the DD. I called my local diesel repair guy told him what I had and what I was looking for (something to run my mods. and tow a 10K trailer with 2 4wheelers behind that) he said there is a clutch from SouthBend, 450 & 550 with hydraulics and it will run you about $1800 installed.
He said that I might have some "hopping" when backing up a trailer, or taking off with the trailer but everything else should run pretty smooth. I worry about the "hopping" a little. I'm not sure what he means and how much hopping I would have. I would hate trying to back in the trailer (kind of tight fit) and have an added worry of it hopping into something...
I just want something that will shift smoothly and hold up without slipping AND won't wear out my knee trying to push-in

Traction bars to keep the leaf springs from wrapping under torque loads will eliminate the take-off hopping!
Clutch for towing
I tow a 15000 # fifth wheel stock clutch is slipping on a good size hill with my quad race box on the low tow setting.what clutch should i be looking at and what should i expect to pay.
bishgeo,
if you only intend to tow travel trailers with it, and only stick with mods such as the quad race(or similar) you will be very happy with an OFE.
smooth engagement, easy to back in with, holds well, pedal pressure isnt much more than stock.
a very good all around clutch.

My clutch started slipping today. Now Im looking into SB clutches. I tow HEAVY ... (25K-30K lbs.), and have edge juice (was about to upgrade to "hot").
I want a real streetable clutch. I dont think I could deal with noisyness, and hard to shift. Would the MU 1947 Con OFE, or the MU 1947 Con FE be a good choice for me.
Should I consider something else?

The OFE is your best choice for you needs. The OFE feels and acts just like the stocker, but can hold 450hp/900tq. The FE is pretty grabby, and it would take you quite a while to hook up to a trailer with it, unless you got some crazy trailor hookin skillz
but its still possible.

but its still possible.
Think about your future mods for your truck before ordering. If you know youll always be around 500rwhp or below go with the ofe for sure, to many people on here talk great about the holding power and smoothness. i opted for the stouter CON FE because i knew i would later go up to the PPE HOT and end up at or over the 550 mark. But wow this thing is graby! And it def. doesnt shift as quick as it did before. Get what ever clutch fits you hp numbers more so than your budget, dont sqimp here its too expensive to do it twice!!! JMHO
