smarty + wrong vin#

I just searched through every thread with smarty in the title and could not find anything. I bought my smarty and every time I plug it in it says error wrong vin#. I posted a week ago about the same thing but didn't get the info I was after. I have gone to four different dealerships and havn't found one that would write in the last four digits of my vin, so I'm looking for anyone in either the Peoria, IL area or the Louisville, KY area with a DRB scan tool, or a scanner that will do this. Or if anyone has had it done, where is the dealership you had it done at, and if you did have it done do you know exactly what they had to do? Also for Marco, or Bob, do you have a program that can be used for this, or is it possible to make a new program that could be sent to me to download? Thanks.

This has actually come up before. With some 2003's Dodge left the last 4 off of the VIN in the ECM. You'll need to go to the dealer to get it corrected.

what should I tell the dealer when I take it in?

Tell the dealer that you want the entire VIN written to your ECM. Tell them that when you use a code reader it tells you that the VIN number is incomplete AND you cannot scan your vehicle. Many auto parts stores will scan you truck when you throw a code - even on a Sunday - something dealerships DO NOT offer, you just want your ECM to be correct AND it should be a done deal, it should also be at no charge since it should have been done in the first place when the truck was new. If they have a small fee, get it done anyway, but push for it free.

thanks a lot guys, but keep them coming incase there is another easier option. I forgot to call them today, but I bought the smarty from TST, do you all think that they would have the capability of doing it at their shop because I only live about 60 miles away from them?

i would call and ask to speak with the service manager. he should be able to best help you. it will get you around the flunky service advisor's.

I had the same problem. Dealer didn't have a clue. I called MADS Electronics @ 503-908-7783. Their programmers built a download specific for my truck. Easy and at no cost. (My Smarty Jr. was new)
