Smarty jr towing EGT's

I'm running the Smarty jr on SW3, TM default/2, TQ4 and POD @75, towing a 7000# travel trailer. EGT's are hitting 1200 degrees, when pulling steep hills. I'm in 5th gear running approx 60mph, turning approx 2250 rpm's. Should I be too concerned about it, or is that about normal for my set up? It seems to just level off @ 1200* and not go higher. I like the setting because of the increased MPG's, which are approx 16.5 mpg. The power and driveability are better too. I tried SW1,TM default,TQ4,POD99 and the mileage really drops off to around 12 mpg, although EGT's were cooler (about 1050*), travelling the exact same route. Maybe I should try SW3,TM4,TQ4, POD75. Would changing the timing, cool the EGT's any? It may smoke too much though.

I hope you get some replies to your thread, I am looking into a smarty as we speak and use it on my 03 to pull about 13,000 lbs through some hills. I have no idea on how to tune yet, but I will def. try the tune you are using currently for the 16.5mpg. pulling that much weight that is some good numbers.

Have you tried using SW2 towing tune, I tow a 12k 5er and it keeps the EGT'S in check and I get 15.2 mpg hand calculation, never trust the overhead

The cummins can handle 1250 all day long with no issues. If you see 1200 on hills I would not worry about it. Running that many rpms will give you lots of cooling air into the cylinders.

Are you running the most recent software upgrade?

Also I would never tow on anything but PoD99, it limits throttle input which may effect available rpms, not something you want to do on a hill.

If your clutch is stock I would run SW1 TM2 TQ4 PoD 99. Mileage is a function of hp, if you get better mileage on SW3 it's because you put a brick under your foot.

Otherwise EGT's seem fine.

Thanks for the replies. My Smarty Jr came with 5.13A. Is that the latest? Is TQ4 the mildest setting for torque, with that version? So, running POD75, it can limit RPM's? I was running approx 2250 rpm in 5th gear and it felt like I could go a lot more. You're right about the brick under the peddle. I drive like a grampa, oh wait, I am a grampa. I sure like the way it runs with the setting I'm using, but if there is something better, I'll try it.

5.14B is the latest software. The timing has been redone, and it's a very smooth tune.

PoD essentially removes pedal input. So WOT at PoD 75 is like 75% throttle at PoD 99. The ECM needs to see a certain throttle position to fuel hard enough to see certain rpms. Next time your empty put the PoD at 50 and see how little power you have in the upper end.

I use PoD myself, but only in the winter and on dirt roads, never when towing. I don't what the power limited that way, if I want less power I'll run a lower SW.

TQ4 is the mildest setting, other than stock, on 5.13 and 5.14, and the best choice for towing and the G56 DMF clutch.

Thanks! When I download 5.14, do the timing and torque settings/numbers, still have the same meanings as 5.13?

The torque settings do, but the timing is different. Default is now max timing, where before TM4 was max.

There is far more to consider than just the temp in the exhaust manifold. Consider that the OP's motor in 100% stock trim can hold 1450° and not hurt a thing, but if he were to do that now he would be rebuilding his motor.

For the most part a Smarty Jr tuned truck is good to 1250° continuous, and 1300° momentary. But to just say the Cummins can hold 1250° is not a real accurate blanket statement.

Thanks for your input. The tune you're suggesting here would be the same with 5.14, right? Another question, is my "stock" tune still stored in my Smarty, with the update (5.14) downloaded? It kind of worried me, when it said, "erasing memory" when I was loading 5.14. Thanks again!

It has the most recent OEM tune in it, so your up to date whenever you go back stock.

Those settings are good for 5.14.

I hate to hijack this but they changed the settings for this version? Can you tell us what the differences are? Is it just the 1 timing setting? I know this has been done before but MADS never keeps things the same... drives me nuts. It would be nice if they told you what changes from version to version.
