Smarty JR PoD Mileage Settings

Seemed like a good idea to start a new thread, where we can post what works and what doesn't. This should save time for those looking for solutions someone has proven out.

Today, I started with SW2, TM3, TQ4 and PoD at 40%. Good launch, but fades pretty quick. Tried driving by the EGT and keeping it between 550 and 700 degrees. Better mileage, maybe +2 by the OHC. Only 40 miles on this tank, so no concrete data yet. Pretty darn good on the ice and snow though.

AH64ID mentioned power spikes and some of those by the CC. I'm no clear on what he meant by that.

Sounds like this could be a good thread if we get some #'s. I have been cutting pasting users input into a file as I find them just to see what settings do what. I typically don't drive the truck so I don't get to try many settings that often. Lets hope people post.

I tried the PoD for the first time tonight. SW3- defaults, and 48 PoD. The truck was a dog off the line, to the point where it would be dangerous to pull out in front of someone. On the hwy, it was running at about 2300 rpm's @55mph. IMO, that will negate any potential fuel savings. When I got home, the overhead said 16.4 mpg avg for the trip, which is less then I get at stock settings. Not exactly a great overall experience.

I love the concept of PoD, but I have my doubts as to some of the claims of gains I've seen here. I don't understand why it's beneficial to run SW3 and then drop the power 50%? Wouldn't it be better to run at stock since it's essentially what you are doing by running SW3 at 50% is adding power only to cut power?

2300RPM's @ 55mph with a 48RE? No Overdrive? Confused. I pull like 1.5k at 55MPH in OD.

You'll see better mileage around town with POD, I'm running SW3 at 30POD and it gets around fine for me. The improvement overstock is timing and duration changes.

I picked up about 1.5mpg with SW3, Tm4, Tq0, Pod 50 on my last tank. I am tweaking it on this tank with the Tm3, Tq2 and see if I get a change.

There are so many possible combinations that a spreadsheet is a good way to go. I'm almost 200miles on my first test tank.

Settings are SW2, TM3, TQ4 PoD40. Good off the line, but goes soft quickly. Pulls up through fifth just fine, and good traction on snow and ice. Not very impressive on grades, but the EGT never breaks 1000. I'm ahead of my personal best ever, but only by 4 or 5 tenths.

Best ever was 20.4mpg on 500+ miles using the original SW1 shipped in the Smarty Jr. It got smokey in summer.

The more I think about this, the more I'm wondering if detuning makes any sense in normal driving. Maybe on a long xcountry freeway trip.

I should have added that my bump from mpgs were mainly on an "in-town" tank. I would guess about 70% in town 30% highway. I don't have any numbers on a road trip yet.

Yep, 48re. I normally pull around 1500 rpm's at that speed too, but the overdrive must have been locked out or something by Jr. I'd be scared to death to try 30 on the road. I debated pulling over on the on ramp to adjust the PoD to 75 or so. The upper 40's was not adequate for normal driving in my truck.

Just that when you give it fuel it will fuel real hard for a second then back off, the cruise control is really bad about this... you get nothing out of the hard fueling... reducing the PoD reduces the quick hard fueling..

Guys with autos cannot go as low on the PoD as guys with sticks.. this is because the tranny still uses TPS for shifting and gear selection.. and reducing the PoD increases the amount of TPS needed to get and stay moving..

Thats weird man. Think its the built tranny? I know if I put it in tow mode it will hardly shift into OD.

Actually made it 7 days to fill up was every 5 days.

Mine was 18.9 (Hand Calc) 530 miles, up about 2mpg.

SW2 45% TM3 TQ4 with 400# ballast in bed, Stanadyne perf. added.

now trying SW3 50% TM3 TQ4

This was my post at the other thread, still tuning SW3.
Last week wasn't good several cold days.
90% hwy driving.

It must be. I don't know why I would experience something different then what others are seeing.

Is anyone seeing high EGT's with the JR?
