Smarty Jr.....OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All I've got to say is I thought my truck ran good before! Last night, after a week and a half with the gauges installed and good pull though the hills with the camper, I was able to establish a good baseline of temps.

I installed the Jr on level 1 and went for a drive. I could deffinately tell the truck ran better and was having a good time with it I had my 18 year old nephew with me and asked him if we should try level two. You can only guess what his answer was. So, back to the house we went, set it on level and two and OMG This truck is an animal. We were both amazed is all I can say.

I set it on level 2 and left the timing and torque on default. Will adjusting the timing and torque make a difference?

I can't even image what it would be like to drive a truck like some of you guys have with 500-600 horse and more.

I'm not going to even try level 3. I'll just get myself in trouble.

I've been running the Jr for a couple of years now. I have gone thru phases of logging the results of every possible setting with the Revo tune. I have finally settled on running on setting 3 with the torque set at 3 and the timing on 4. For my needs this has been the optimum setting for me. Fantastic power when I want it, but I rarely need it. 2/3rds throttle will pass anything that doesn't want to race. My fuel economy is 16.5 in town stop and go. I just took a road trip empty from Seattle to Redding Ca. and averaged (hand calc.) 19.89 MPG. That was at 70 to 75 MPH with half of it on cruise. If you can learn to moderate the go pedal I would highly recomend max setting 3. However if you push the go pedal to the floor it sucks fuel at twice the rate your stock truck will, (but then again your going twice as fast).
I would suggest monitoring your exhaust temps when towing, but empty at full WOT up hill I have never seen more then 1250 degrees sustained. If you have the stock intake and exhaust settup you may see higher temps. When my truck was stock (including exhaust) I used to see 1400 degrees regularly when towing or passing while empty. I have never seen exhaust temps that high running my smarty. Turn it up! You'll love it! Just use common sense. Oh, tow and economy are good tunes but you really don't know what your missing until you turn it up. Just look at my sig. It's no barn burner like a lot of guy's on here but it's still fun. Sorry for the long ramble....

With the Ice box and Aeroturbine 4040XL, I saw 1400 degrees at one time last weekend on a long pull in Tow/Haul mode. I backed off and it cooled right down. I'll be making the same run this weekend and am anxious to see if the Smarty will cool those temps down any on the same pull. Everything I read says it will run cooler so I'm anxious to find out what it will actually do.
I'm debating if I should run it on level 2 the towing setting or not??? I can't afford to rebuild the tranny.

I just installed it yesterday. Put it on level 3 and I guess default settings for the torque and timing. I'll mess with those this weekend.

It certainly smokes now and hauls tail!

I decided not to install a EGT gauge because I've read the smarty jr will actually cool it down.
I'll just keep in mind not to let it bog or rag on it on steep up hills just like I did stock and possibly will put it back to stock on long tows if the programmer raises the EGT towing???

Don't worry about your tranny on level two. Your exhaust temps will stay down. You may notice much more smoke on a pull. I certianly did. No matter where I adjusted the torque and timing it still smokes heavy while towing on level 2. However from what I've read every truck reacts slightly different. If you run everything on default settings and stay on level two your tranny will be fine. How ever even on a stock truck if you run it like you stole it you can break it. Just don't race some one or challenge a chevy too a pull off and you'll be fine. Even though I know you'd kill that chevy.

Some say that even though EGT lowers with the smarty cyl temp is actually higher. I don't know details on how. I do like the Jr.

This is absolutely true ! Think about it, the same amount of heat is being produced but the increased timing just keeps more of it in the combustion chamber where it actually is beneficial to making power. This is the only reason you get better mileage with the programmer. What you have to keep in mind is although the exhaust valve and turbo are seeing less heat the pistons, rings, etc are seeing much more pressure and heat load. If you turn up the fuel (sw2 or 3) there's obviously even more heat and pressure potential. Don't get me wrong, I believe the Jr is a very safe programmer but it still requires common sense and some understanding.

Ghamilton, I don't know how heavy you're towing or how heavy your foot is but SW2 can definitely shorten the life of your auto. Just keep in mind It adds almost 200ft lbs of torque to the wheels so go easy on the go peddle especially at slow speeds and you may want to increase torque management. Just an idea.

Thanks for the advice!!! I'm only towing a 6500# travel trailer. I didn't think I had a heavy foot until the other night when I loaded SW2 and left TM and TQ management on default. Holy smokes this thing will haul. I left it on this setting for an hour and told myself I better back it off. I set it back to SW1 with timing and torque on default to pull the camper to the hills this weekend. I liked the setting, deffinately makes a difference but I'm going back the SW2 and will take your advice and set the TQ management to 4. The last thing I want to do is hurt the tranny and have to dump a bunch of money into it.

Greg.
