Simple plug and play box?

I've been on this site for a few months on and off, so I apologize for my ignorance. I have read pages of information, all of which gets confusing as it seems never-ending. Add to that the posted issues with dealers/warranties and what not.

I would like to add a smallish performance box to my truck. Is there anything simple that would fit this bill? I don't need a lot of HP nor do I want excessive exhaust temps, I don't want to drill, tap, cut or crimp anything either. Is there a simple component that can plug in, and easily be unplugged to go back to stock? I do some occasional towing, and am in the middle of light or heavy on the throttle. Again, I'm not looking for a dragster.

I'm not even sure if this is the correct place to put this.

Any suggestions or first hand knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Okay I hear you. You want a little more safe power but no risk. Your truck is already big power as it is compared to other vehicles. It is designed to reliably perform within the design parameters. Push that envelope without monitoring GAUGES and your asking for trouble in my opinion only. First get gauges and then improve the air in air out (intake/exhaust). Then and only then are you ready for a mild safe horsepower increase. Hey I can relate since my next mod is intake/exhaust. Of course this stuff is addicting so a little is never enough,I don't care who or what you think you are Hey guy read this first http://www.drperformance.com/TDR48.pdf.
Ya spring has sprung and the tax man owes me

Take a look at SP Diesel's Stage I, I think it is rated for 75hp and is adjustable with a Fuel Economy mode. www.spdiesel.com

I've got one of there Stage II's on my truck and it works great, might just be more power then your looking for.

Quad XZT. Guages first or Quad's new monitor. Stock air system. The thing works great. Better passing power when needed and a little better mileage if you drive easy by keeping an occasional eye on the guages. Won't stress other components.

IMHO, An Edge EZ on levels 1 or 2 would fit the bill. Can occasionally find good deals on 'em on eBay.

Quad box, XZT, Std or Race. The harness plugs into 2 sensors on the engine and one under the dash on the gas pedal (TPS). Took 10 minutes to install mine. The standard and the race you can switch off, or back off the power if things are getting hot. I leave mine off until the engine gets up to temp.

The quad standard box is considered to be a mild box (pressure). It has Four settings 1.off 2. 30/hp 3. 60/hp 4. 100/hp. The off button is nice. Quad has a monitor. It appears from my set up that it should be a quick on and off. The XZT is 65hp and thats it. I keep mine off until it is warmed up than I switch to 30hp for normal driving.
It is very confusing. I started out with the exhaust, then the intake and then gauges. Good luck

I'm "Pro Quad" but anything under 100 hp or so would work fine. I think quad has done the research to keep the good balance of pressure & timing. My std box works just fine, although it has some low voltage issues which Jeremy believes will be solved w/ a new harness. I don't have gauges 'cause I'm waiting for the monitor. I use common sense in driving & don't run the ****
out of it & I have BEEN 100% FINE W/O GAUGES. Like I have read....get the STD box & run it on 30 or 60...You'll always have 100 to play around with. DO
GET THE MONITOR TO MATCH YOUR BOX/CHIP. IMHO,thats the way to go....
match product w/product.

I'M NOT ADVOCATING RUNNING W/O GAUGES FOREVER.... Just on quad ONLY
until the monitor comes out....

I am too going to do Minimal mods on my truck. About a year ago people were complaining about their cruise control surging when they hooked up their boxes. Has this problem been rectified by now, or are people still having this problem when they plug a power box in??

I am doing a minor mod to my stock intake, (5.5 alum. tube, good drop in filter, and maybe a PVC elbow in the bottom of the airbox to let more air in).
I am going to get a triple gauge kit, (Pyro, trans, and boost).

I am trying to do minimal mods for maybe a little more power, and I am also interested in a simple plug in box for a little more power maybe when I start towing my Nova to the track.

I know for every action there is a re-action, when I start towing, with maybe a box, will I have to worry about the converter in the trans now??

I know these trucks have gobs of power stock, but all I hear is about how weak the converters are. I am just concerned if I ever put a box on, with the extra power, am I going to be putting a converter in soon??

If you're worried about converter try this..... punch button on your auto lever
(o/d lockout)...build up rpms as you approach to shift (as you normally would)
punch button shifting to o/d while letting off gas pedal then ease back into it
This will let converter hook up as gently as possible.

I think the problems come from the folks who dog the crap out of these vehicles, although heavy towing over time will get to the converter too. It is
a weak converter, per my reading.
