Mine is gone and don't regret it a bit, the smell is different but not bad, like said above "like a diesel should smell like", picked up 1 MPG and lowered EGT's a bit...

So if i decided to gut the kitty, would it make a difference to sleeve it or just leave it hollowed out?

I'd get a delete pipe and save the cat if you ever need it for some reason, or if you need a quick 30 dollars you can take it to the scrap yard. If you gut it, I'd sleeve it. I don't like the idea of all the remnants from the dismantling process flying around in there. Do you guys that gut get all that ceramic stuff out of there? BTW, mine is gone, My BD 5" starts at the 4", just where the beginning of the cat was. One can tell if it's gutted very easily by just tapping on it lightly with a metal object. The gutted ones have a very distinctive ring to them. The full ones do not.

That why I would take a 1/2 inch extension and pound a 4" hole through it. Then it still sounds full when you tap on it. If I was gonna do something like that.

I didn't notice any gain in MPG, it does smell like a diesel now, and the exhaust note sounds better to me (a little more growl. I didn't have my EGT gauge installed with the cat so I don't know if it lowered my EGT's.

For the $$ I spent on the delete pipe I don't think I'd recommend it given my results.

it will drone like crazy if you take the cat out. leave the cat and ditch the muffler.

Look around every other post is asking about which muffler to run to kill drone.

I killed mine about 25,000 miles ago..

1. Noticed a drop in egt's.
2. Slightly better MPG's
3. Can smell the difference
4. Slightly louder outside the vehicle
5. NO DRONE WHAT SO EVER

The only con I have is make sure you dont have good clothes on when you cut it off.

Well kitty went bye-bye yesterday. I can barely tell the truck is any louder, and NO drone at all. I have noticed EGT's down some but too early to comment on the fuel mileage situation. Truck sounds a little throatier coming out the exhaust than before.

Has anyone used the Magnaflow 5" cat? I cannot tell if it is legal or not from the site, which likely means not. I'm in California so the enviro-***** will check eventually. So I was thinking 5" turbo-back with the 5" cat and see if they squak.

I think a lot of people that remove cats put the Aeroturbine mufflers/resonators in their place. Along with Smarty on half power biodiesel should help get you through emmissions tests.

I removed my cat last winter. I installed a 86131M Nelson (Fleetgaurd) muffler at the same time.
Truck does not sound louder at cruising speed.
It does smell a little more (The wife noticed and commented).
Truck smokes less after removing the cat with my Smarty.
Temps are down a little.
I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. It was a cheap mod to cut out it and the factory muffler and weld in some pipe and the new muffler.
