Removing catalytic converter pros-vs-cons?

Has anyone removed their catalytic converter? A friend removed his off his 5.9 and said it made a big difference in performance and a little better milage too..Also will it lower EGT's?...

No cons unless you have a state that checks for it in vehicle inspections or emissions inspections.

It will reduce EGT's and improve MPG's slightly. More so if it is clogged.

remove it and hollow it out and re-install if you live in an inspection state. get a smarty and use 1/2 power to do the test.

Planning on removing my kitty. Still going to keep stock muffler for now. Will removing the kitty make my truck louder? What about drone, any problems?

Removing the cat will lower Egt's. I saw a 150* drop. It will also make your truck slightly louder but worth it to lower the EGT's..Performance wise cant say that I noticed a difference.

Where is the best place to get a kitty delete pipe? My local muffler shop doesn't have 4" pipe.

We dont have to do emmissions testing here. So I thought I would just remove it and if testing ever is mandated then just have it put back in. I good friend of mines owns and operates "Economy Muffler" here in Yuma, AZ.

You have the right idea. Gutting it sounds like a neat idea at first, but it would be a bummer if they ever did start testing and you had to go buy a new one. And any state trooper who would crawl under your truck would ALSO be able to smell the difference. That and the whole gas expanding then contracting argument... not sure how nominal, but a delete pipe is supposedly better if you want to avoid that and maintain flow. But I'm no engineer

As for differences, I haven't seen a huge increase in economy, maybe .5 mpg, 1 if I'm lucky. Truck seems to spool faster, but could be placebo. LOVE the sound... and the smell. Do it - you won't regret it. If you do, put it back on. Can't de-gut it though

As for where to buy I don't know if where I bought mine is a DTR sponsor, so pm me if you need more info.

you can't smell the difference with a diesel. if they do a visual, a gutted cat looks like a complete cat. You can use smarty on 1/2 power to pass emissions.

there is also CARB legal replacement high flow cats available

Pro - sounds mean, slightly lower EGT's
Cons - really chapped neighbours, drone, etc...

I took mine out just to end up putting it back in. I noticed a 50 degree difference in EGT's but I hated how noisy it was. It was too loud in the cab especially on the kids ears.

Seriously?!?
I couldn't smell much - if anything at all - outside the truck before, but now I get a big ole whiff every time I roll up to a stop with the windows down. Step outside and it smells like an old school bus.

I don't disagree here.

Doesn't the OEM cat have pretty decent flow... why spend $350+?

Not trying to flame anybody or their decision to gut, just my $0.02. I was on the fence for a LONG time regarding the delete/gut decision. Ultimately I decided that I can play dumb until Texas really decides to crack down. Now for the other 49 states, I haven't a clue

Regarding the drone - it starts somewhere around 73-74 mph. Perfect for keeping me from speeding on long trips and keeping my mpgs up!

If you do decide to gut, wear a respirator.
