reliable mod's?

With the purchase of our 07 Ram, I'm looking to actually start modifing it to get some better mpg's and maybe even a lil more juice. However, this is going to be a truck thats gonna be towing 4 ton dumpsters during the hot summers and plowing in the winters. Our other two rams have now more than 200k on them but we've kept the always stock, bone stock.

What can I do to this truck to get better mpg's? Turbo-back? programer?

I'm gonna be putting on around 30k a year and the last thing I want is to fry the internals of tranny.

Thanks for any advice

First off, Welcome to DTR!!

Second, Fill out your signature (userCP in the upper left) with all the truck info and you will get better answers for any future questions.

If you have a 5.9 you can simply get a Smarty Jr to help with more power and better mileage. If you have the 6.7 you can do the deletes of the emissions equipment to gain some mileage and then also add a Smarty Jr after the deletes.

If you have the 48RE auto trans you will need to be very careful with adding ANY extra power so you don't grenade it.

If you have the 68RE auto you are better off.

With more info about your truck we can give better answers

You would have the 48RE

as for the 5.9's, would deleting the cat negatively effect my truck? I'm thinking about doing a straight pipe

No. But I would keep it for future needs in case it is required for an emissions test.

Diesel Power magazine did an article about a year or two ago showing the cat delete didn't do much in performance gains for a stock or mildly modded truck, so save yourself some time and money there and leave it be.

Gauges should always be the first mod; boost, EGT, tranny temp, and maybe lift pump fuel pressure if you need it.

For your concerns about towing, I would look hard at the VB/TC mods. The 48RE isn't a bad transmission, it's just not build to handle the power of the engine in front of it.

It's got a 4 inch exhaust on it already but I would consider replacing the muffler with either a Donaldson or a resonator like something from Aero Muffler's 4040XL.

Definately look at some of the fuel filtration posts we've been discussing. I'm looking to do something similar if I have enough time while home on vacation this summer (for some reason I just never have enough time while I'm home).

Smarty or Smarty Jr. Gauges.

would gauges be required for just a edge max eco and 5" turbo back?
