Question on EGTs
How hot is too hot?? I know 1250 is the general rule of thumb to halt at, but my 2004.5 will get to 1200 easy just accellerating to 75-80 Mph on stock mode. I know I could easily push it to 1300-1350 w/ my MP-8 @ 100% and thats just holding the accellerator down 3/4 to that speed. Hate to see how high it would climb w/ the pedal mashed to the floor to that speed. Do the 5.9Ls run hotter than previous engines?

Im sure someone will chime in who knows better than me, but from what I understand, if you are looking POST turbo, your EGTs can get up to 1450 without problems on the '04.5 You just don't want them any higher than that.

Pre-turbo those numbers seem pretty normal to me. I could hit 1350* on all stock truck empty on full WOT. With boxes(DR Performance, Juice, Quad Race) I would get to 1550* on full WOT with AFE and exhaust. From talking with earlier Cummins owners the 325/600 and up run quite a bit hotter normally. I try to keep my stack stettings so that I don't really get over 1350* daily driving, but I have seen 1700+* on the track for a few seconds at a time.

[whistle] Well that's a relief, I set my pyrometer in the manifold over the 3rd cyl. Aluminium melts at/around 1300 right?? and you can expect around a 250 degree diff. from manifold to turbo correct?
|
it is roughly a 250-300* drop if measured pre turbo and post turbo. you dont want to see 10008 post turbo for very long. that means it is ~1300* pre. bad things happen when internals are overheated for too long, too often. the best thing that will happen is the turbo needs to be rebuilt. it is the crowns and valve faces, seats that I would be concerned with.
these engines are built with durability in mind, hence the reason for piston squirters, and stellite seats. they are made to take punishment, but everything will eventually fail when abused. with my upgraded turbo and a smarty/quad stack, i didnt get over 1200*. with the turbo and quad when towing 10k, i cant get over 1250* these are preturbo. |
I will pull my trailer and hit 1300 pre turbo, I will let it pull up to 1450 if I am allmost at the top of the hill,, but not for long will I let it go,,, fortunately I have not ever had to let off

I used to really worry when I would see mine get to 1300* on WOT and think I was a few degrees away from melting pistons. Although I have seen the high numbers on mine a few times, they were never more than a second or so. I have never sustained over 1250* for more than an few seconds on the road even when loaded pretty good. |
DodgeZilla, what upgrade turbo do you run?
|
industrial injection super phat shaft 62/14
super means that it is upgradeable to a 66 phat shaft has a bigger shaft to cut down on the breakage and bending caused by barking. the 62/14 gives a good compromise between quick spool and higher flow. my stocker spooled faster, but no so much to be detrimental. the reduction in egts is great, this thing is very driveable, the towing power is much better. i am very happy with the turbo. and that thing at 47psi sounds great. |
How about the Edge Jammer BB or the ATS Aurora 2000?? I won't be running over 500hp anyhow. I want to get the turbo w/ the fastest spool up and ability to improve towing and keeping my EGTs down. Not gonna go w/ a twin turbo setup either.
