question about powermax box

Hi all,

I just ordered a powermax cr without gauges, since my truck has an egt and boost gauge already. I talked to the people at powermax, and they told me that I can splice into the line from my pyro probe and use that one probe to drive both the gauge and the powermax box, so that the box can defuel when necessary. In looking at the installation instructions online, it said nothing about using an existing pyro probe with the box that does not have gauges built in. This kind makes me wonder if the guy was right or not. Anybody have a second opinion?

If you want to set defueling I think you need to buy the box with guages.

Like the one I just won from you PourinDiesel[laugh] ... yea that's me[eyecrazy] !!

How would you set the parameters without the gauge console or are they preset??

The guy at powermax said something about the defueling being set to occur at 1350, and that if I wanted another temperature to let him know then so they could set it before sending the box out. Come to think of it, that does sound like they did build defueling capability into the box w/o gauges, which in turn means that there must be a wire(s) to hook a pyro probe to. Anyone here mess with one of these without the gauges built in?

I would return the guage-less one and just buck up for the one with guages.... It is not back to have two egts, then move the old one to the post-turbo position

And BTW - by saying you talked to "powermax" - I assume you mean you talked to "TST products" right?

Yeah, I meant I talked to TST. As for the gauges, is there really any benefit to having 2 pyro's? And, if I got the one with the gauges, would I absolutely have to put another probe in? If so, that would kinda suck, since the dealership would know something was up when another probe appeared under the hood.

Don't forget to get the TST elbow.

You can't "splice in" to a thermocouple's wiring to drive two gauges... your reading will be WAY off.

Absolutely. The pre-turbo probe will allow the TST to monitor your EGT's, and defuel if/when necessary. The post-turbo EGT is what you watch to know when it's safe to shut the engine down.

If so, that would kinda suck, since the dealership would know something was up when another probe appeared under the hood.
You mean as opposed to seeing the TST box and wiring harnesses all over the engine? Or are you planning on removing the TST before taking the truck in? As for two probes, so what? The post-turbo will be in the exhaust elbow, and will be pretty much invisible unless someone's servicing the exhaust. Even then, you just like to keep tabs on your engine, and mounted a second pyro post-turbo (so you could shut the truck down safely). Your existing EGT probe IS mounted in your exhaust manifold, right?

AND... DONT EVER,EVER USE THE EDGE EZ ELBOW

that elbow will sent your turbo to the moon with boost

Or at least to the end of your tailpipe, albeit in several pieces :)
