pyrometer question

Just installed an autometer pyrometer gauge, the gauge will not come down fully to the 0 point when powered up it wants to start at the 1... any comments or suggestions?? it seems to work fine but I cant be sure I,m getting an accurate temp. because of the starting point.

It is probably working fine. It is going to read whatever the manifold is at the time. The power to it is only for the backlight.

In other words..........here in North Texas where it has been 100+ degree for about 2 months now............the pyro gauge will probably never go below that outside ambient temp.

After you turn your truck off, it should still read 250-300 degrees or so for a while.......until it cools down.

It is not going to "start" at 0........unless you are in winter weather where the outside temp is 0.

Last summer when we were working in Yuma and Phoenix, I would come out early in the morning, and before I even started the truck the pyro was alread near the 150 mark. Don't think I ever saw it below 100 that summer.

Pyros are pretty accuate, but uncalibrated for our applications. They give fraily accurate readings in the higher temp levels rather than the lower.

Congrats to you for putting one in.

the autometer pyro's need 12vdc to power the stepper motor that control the gauge needle movement. when you power it off, it will stop anywhere on the dial [mine usually ends up sitting between 5 to 7 clock position] when you power it up, it jumps to what the t-couple is sensing. usually at ambiant temp.. they also need the ~12vdc for gauge lighting [separate feed from stepper motor power]

Thanks Nick. I learn something new everyday. My gauges are Di Pricol and I don't have any experience with any other brand. I figured that they all worked the same or similar.
