I'm going to install my pyro today. I want to install the themocouple before the turbo. Do I have to split to turbo from the exahust manifold before i drill and tap the hole. I ask this because I'm worried about filings getting into the turbo. One person told me to let idol when I drill, he said this would blow most of the filing out.

Thanks For the Help.

Best advice is to do a search. There are several different ways to do it. I just drilled and used grease on the bit. I then used a magnet to pull out what went in the manifold.

Its not difficult to seperate the turbo from the manifold and I would suggest to do it so that you dont end up having to upgrade to a bigger turbo when something falls down and gets into the exhaust impellar and chews up the blades. Dont ask me how I know all of this

I put duck tape over the tail pipe. Made a cross with it leaving 4 small holes, kept the engine idling the whole time. Start with small drill bit and work your up. I went out and bought some good drill bits. (Good idea to wear safety glasses because the engine blows pieces all over while drilling) I only used grease on the tap. Go very slow with the tap because it can break off, then you will have a problem, so go slow, once it's started, only turn a 1/4 turn at a time and 1/4 turn back, every full turn in, back out all the way, clean and re-grease. Take your time, it's easy to do.

It just did mine this weekend. Just leave the engine idling when you feel that you are about to cut through put very light pressure on the drill so the shavings are small. You will be suprised that the shaving fly right out(eye protection is not a bab idea). Do the same when you tap for threads. After the way the shavings blew out of the hole I would not worry a bit about shavings going through the turbo.
Hope this helps it was a breeze!

And if your drill bit breaks or chips while breaking thru? I am not saying that the other methods dont work because they did on my '01, but they didnt work this time around on the '07. When I dropped the turbo to see what the problem was I was kicking myself for not doing it from the get go as easy as it was. [dummy]
Total cost for me for not dropping turbo
SPS 62/14 $1600
Smarty $685

Magnetize your bit and tap, that will hold most of the filings. When your done pass a small magnet into the manifold to pick up the rest......

Jeephauler - we would love to see photos of the damage, did you break off the drill bit tip??

Just did mine this past weekend. Like 05HDRAM above, just greased the bit and the tap. I used a variable speed Dewalt drill and went real slow, especially when I was about to break through. Used a magnet in every direction through the hole until I couldn't see any more filings on the magnet. I also used criss-crossed tape over my exhaust when I was done and started it and let her run for about 30 seconds. Worked perfect for me. Good luck!!!
